42nd Street

Ginger Rogers danced onto our screens as Annie in the 1933 black and white musical, 42nd street. The film was set in the early days of the depression and tells the story of an ailing Broadway director who returns to produce one final show, but during rehearsals his leading lady becomes injured and must be replaced with a mere novice.

42nd Street is still known for its theatres, but it also houses some of the city’s most prominent buildings. The Chrysler Building, Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, New York Library, The UN and the Port Authority Building are all located on this street, which makes it ideal for sightseeing New York. You’ll soon find yourself humming the title tune to the feel-good musical as you stroll down the bustling sidewalks of this street.

34th Street

When “Miracle on 34th Street” came out in 1947, and then again in 1994, the question on everyone’s lips was whether or not Santa Claus actually existed. Little Susan Walker was a sceptic and despite Ed’s attempts to sway her into believing, it wasn’t until the end of the movie that she became really convinced of her beliefs. The film was set around the fictional department store of Coles, but you’ll find the famous American store of Macy’s on this street when you’re sightseeing New York.

If you’re planning on visiting New York during the American holiday of Thanksgiving then this is the street where you can catch the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, with the brightly coloured floats that also featured in the Miracle on 34th Street movie. As well as Macy’s, 34th Street also houses New York’s most famous monument, the Empire State Building.

110th Street

In 1972, Across 110th Street hit cinema screens and became famous for becoming the first film to use a self-blimped camera for synced sound. The crime film, shot on location in Harlem, tells the story of a good cop searching for three men who slaughtered five men in a robbery and stole $300,000 dollars from a Mafia-owned policy bank.

Based on the film plot, the street probably isn’t high on your list of places to visit whilst sightseeing New York. However, the area of Harlem is a great place to visit if you’re a lover of gospel music. Many reputable companies run tours through this vibrant neighbourhood and visiting a traditional gospel church on a Sunday should be high on your agenda
