Four Songs That You Wouldn’t Guess Are About Drugs

Whilst some songs such as Afroman ‘Because I Got High’ are very clearly about the effects of sampling the by-product of strong cannabis seeds, other artists prefer to adopt a somewhat more subtle approach. Here are four songs that you wouldn’t necessarily have guessed are about cannabis.

La Cucaracha

Unless you’re a Spanish speaker you probably wouldn’t have realised that the unofficial Mexican national anthem is in fact about a cockroach. Or indeed a cockroach so stoned from the effects of strong cannabis seeds that it can’t walk anymore. The chorus translates as ‘the cockroach, the cockroach/ can’t walk anymore/because it doesn’t have to, because it’s lacking the marijuana to smoke’. The song is said to have originated during the great Mexican cockroach scare of 1827. Marijuana was considered to be lethal to cockroaches so Mexican residents were encouraged to grow cannabis as a means of vermin control, now there’s an excuse to buy marijuana seeds online.

The Beatles – Got to Get You into My Life

At first listen it would appear that this is a love song which Paul has written for a girl. However, the lyrics depict a love affair of a very different kind. This song was penned by Paul McCartney after sampling cannabis for the very first time at the bequest of Bob Dylan. So taken was Paul with the drug that he instantly penned this ditty declaring his love of strong cannabis seeds. He disclosed the real meaning of the song in Barry Miles’ book ‘Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now” and the public instantly recognised the real meaning of the lyrics which include ‘I took a ride, I didn’t know what I would find there’.

The Eagles – Hotel California

The meaning of this song has been argued and interpreted by many, but it’s now believed that at least some aspects of the song relating to smoking marijuana and the possibility of taking a bad trip whilst sampling strong cannabis seeds. The second line of the first verse relates to the heady smell of colitas in the air and colitas is known to be a Spanish term for the buds of the cannabis plant. The band have specified that the song is in fact about the high life in Los Angeles and many fans have taken that in its literal sense. The lyric ‘this could be heaven or this could be hell’ is also said to refer to the fact that you aren’t sure what you’re going to get when sampling strong cannabis seeds.

Puff The Magic Dragon

It’s been debated again and again whether this song is about cannabis use or not. The authors have specifically said it isn’t, but we’re aware that as authors of a children song they can’t say much else on the matter. The land of Hannah Lee certainly sounds a lot like the Hawaiian village of Hanalei, which is well known for the strong cannabis seeds which grow there. The lyrics appear to include many other drug references from the land autumn mist to little Jackie Papers, a euphemism for rolling a joint. But as the co-writer Leonard Lipton stated even Star Spangled Banner can be about strong cannabis seeds if you want it to be.
