Eating Out in Menorca

December 26th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Menorca holidays

The food which you’ll sample on your Menorca holiday is usually based on a delectable mix of fresh produce and home cooking. Most major restaurants are located within a few feet of the seafront, making fresh seafood the menu du jour, whilst spiny lobster is the national delicacy. You’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding where to eat out whilst on your holidays in Menorca, but to make things easier here are a few of our favourites:

Es Pla

This restaurant gets the royal seal of approval from King Carlos of Spain, who regularly sails his yacht down from the Spanish Coast to the island of Menorca to dine on his favourite spiny lobster at Es Pla. Located on the seafront, the restaurant is famous for its sumptuous seafood and if you want to dine out like a king whilst on your Menorca holiday then make like Carlos and order yourself a spiny snapper. Lobster is served in many different ways in this restaurant, sautéed in whisky, baked in garlic mayonnaise or even tossed in traditional paella.

Es Pla is open daily from 1-3pm and also from 7-11pm at the weekends.

La Minerva

La Minerva is one of the finest restaurants in Menorca and here reservations are definitely required. The nautical themed restaurant is located in prime position on the port opposite Isla Pinto ferry terminal and specialises in fresh seafood. Whilst spiny lobster is sold here, it is La Minerva’s take on vichyssoise which has earned it its cult following. The vichyssoise is served chilled with chunky lobster pieces hidden amongst its velvety texture. You can not return home from your Menorca holiday without sampling the restaurant’s signature desert, borrachitos al gin de Menorca, cakes soaked in gin and served with a strawberry coulis.

Minerva is open daily from 1.30-3.30pm and for dinner from 8-11.30pm.

Antigua Casa Pilar

You’d be forgiven for feeling as if you’re eating in somebody’s living room when you visit this restaurant whilst on your holiday in Menorca. But the traditional homemade cuisine is where this cosy restaurant has gained its popularity. The menu may be limited but all the food is made with traditional ingredients gathered from local marketplaces and great care is taken during the preparation. The catch of the day, served Menorcan style in a white wine sauce, is ever popular with diners, but we recommend sampling the succulent duck confit served with plums in a red wine sauce.

Antigua Casa Pilar is open from June to September daily from 1-4pm and then for dinner from 8.30-11pm. Out of season it is open from Monday to Saturday from 1-4pm and then from Friday to Saturday from 8.30-11pm.

Biniarroca

Biniarroca has its own unique take on Mediterranean cuisine serving an exquisite menu of freshly prepared foods, using ingredients grown from the hotels own vegetable garden or purchased from local farmer’s markets. The outdoor restaurant is located on a sunny terrace which during the evening is transformed with flickering candles and soft music, creating the perfect romantic atmosphere for you to experience whilst on your holidays in Menorca. The restaurant is known for its hearty cuisine such as oven roasted lamb served in a port sauce, and its beautiful location means that it is a popular venue for newlyweds to hold their wedding receptions.

The Cobblers Garden Restaurant

This delightful townhouse restaurant is situated in the centre of Alaior and specialises in European cuisine and seafood dishes. The Cobblers is the perfect place to visit whilst on your Menorca holiday and during the summer season you can sit in the cobbled courtyard and dine amongst the stars. The restaurant has a small selection of pre-dinner cocktails which must be sampled, including the aptly named ‘Menorca Sunrise’. The classic dishes are beautifully presented and the roast pork chump chop simply must be sampled.

The Cobblers is open during the summer season from 7-11pm.
