Turkish gulet cruises are a great way to explore the coast of Turkey and all the wonders that it has to offer. Get out into the Mediterranean Sea on a traditional gulet and it will feel like you have stepped back in time. A gulet is a traditional wooden Turkish sailing boat, and in modern times has become a very popular way to while away a couple of days, or longer, on the calm Mediterranean – exploring what is possibly one of the most picturesque coastlines in the world. But remember that there are also some fascinating places to visit on land, including the two places below.

Fethiye

Fethiye is another of the major tourist locations in Turkey. It is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Telmessos, and you can still see the remnants. Lots of British citizens have chosen this as a place to settle, and this is mainly due to its great climate and hospitality. When you visit the town on Turkish gulet cruises, there are a number of attractions to see on shore. Fethiye Museum has an excellent collection of ancient artefacts, and the Lycian tombs carved from the rocks are also of great historical interest if you are a history buff. Calis beach is also well worth a visit, and a day trip to Saklikent Gorge, one of the biggest gorges in Europe, is highly recommended.

Kas

Kas is one of the best places in the country for diving and yachting, making it a must-see stop off on Turkish gulet cruises. It is a peaceful and very attractive town sitting on a hill behind the sea, with quaint, narrow streets and peaceful cafes. There is an arts festival held here every year, and, with shipwrecks to explore and the chance of seeing dolphins it is a diver’s paradise. You’ll also find a Hellenistic theatre, some great beaches near by, trekking in the mountains and lots of ruins nearby to explore. A trip to Kekova Island makes for a good excursion, and you can even see some of the ruins under the sea from the boat.

Turkish gulet cruises are a great way to see a number of different towns when you visit this beautiful country. Rather than staying in one place, take a trip down the coast and visit any of the towns above, each of which comes with its own unique character.

Gordon Trevennan works for Peter Sommer Travels, a company specialising in Turkish gulet cruises and cultural, educational, and historical tours in Turkey, Greece, and Italy. Our experienced guides bring the past to life on all of the Turkey tours that we offer.

Thank you for visiting Travel Articles Directory. Feel free to use any of our travel writing articles for your own website, on the condition that you also take the link we have included in the text.

There are many reasons for visiting Turkey, including discovering its unique culture, friendly people, superb food and its ancient legacies. Some parts of Turkey remain relatively undeveloped in terms of tourism, certainly no bad thing – however you won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for luxury, Turkey has plenty of that to offer as well.

Where to go

Perhaps the first types of holiday that come to mind with a luxury Turkey break, are those based around its magnificent coastline. Yet even here, you do not have to be restricted to the sand and sea.
Take Demre (Myrna) for example – within a 2-3 mile radius of this small town you’ll find beaches and several stunning examples of ancient ruins, which include breathtaking rock-hewn Lycian tombs, a Roman theatre and the ruins of a 1500-year-old synagogue. You can also see the burial place of St Nicholas – the person from whom the Santa Claus story is said to originate.
Another example is Olimpos; yes, there is a lovely secluded beach to explore, but also in the woods, the remains of an ancient Roman city.

These are just two examples of what makes Turkey unique. All along the Mediterranean coast you will find, not only fantastic coves, bays, ports and beaches, but you’ll also be able to step back in time some thousands of years – often by simply walking or driving a short distance.

Sail away in Turkey

It’s also possible to take short cruises (or ones that include overnight stays) on Turkish gulets – a unique type of two masted sailing vessel that will gently whisk you from one beautiful coastal location to another. Operating out of many ports, including the fashionable Bodrum and Marmaris, these cruises are an unforgettable experience. All this is available alongside some marvellous golfing and other sporting activities.

Turkey and modern times

As a general rule, prices in Turkey are extremely reasonable compared to UK and EU norms, however, if you’re going to make the most of this beautiful country, you may not wish to have the overhead of constantly needing to find places to eat and dealing with multiple bills. In terms of combining a holiday with extreme luxury, Turkey has plenty to offer including some very comfortable all-inclusive holiday deals. This type of holiday in Turkey will allow you to experience ancient history during the day but in the evenings, to rest in luxurious surroundings knowing that you’re not going to need to start an accounting exercise the day of departure, trying to sort out what you’ve spent. This sort of holiday provides carefree luxury. Turkey provides a stunning backdrop – you just need to enjoy it.

Thank you for visiting Travel Articles Directory.

You may like a holiday that incorporates some history and luxury. Turkey can offer many opportunities for both, and Canakkale is one destination worth considering.

Gallipoli and the Dardanelles

Since ancient times, this area of the coast has been fought over again and again. The strategic value of the area is self-evident from any casual inspection of the map.

Perhaps one of the best-known conflicts arose during the First World War and the Gallipoli campaign, when the allied armies attempted, unsuccessfully, to invade Ottoman Turkey and knock it out of the war. The resulting battles were futile for the allies and resulted only in vast casualties. It is sometimes overlooked that Turkey also suffered hugely in the defence of its territory, with both sides sustaining casualties estimated at over a quarter of a million each.

Today the area is peaceful and poignant with memorials, exhibits and displays. The battlefields are beautifully preserved and are a testament to the Turkish people’s recognition of the suffering of the men of all nations during this horrific episode.

Canakkale is well positioned as a base for exploring the area, and there are some good hotels around providing everything from budget to luxury. Turkey is very proud of the heritage of this region and if you love military history, a visit here is a must.

Troy and Homer

The story of Troy goes back around 2900 years, although the events themselves may have taken place around 3300 years ago. Today, few people can fail to have seen or heard something of Homer’s epic tale. Interestingly, for centuries the tale was dismissed as legend but then, in the 19th century, the ruins of the city associated with Troy were discovered.

Troy isn’t one city but in fact a succession of ancient cities stacked on top of each other. It has to be said that compared to many other historical and archaeological sites in Turkey, Troy doesn’t have many breathtaking ruins, but that really isn’t the point. One can’t help but be a little awed when walking through the streets that may once have echoed to the footsteps of Paris, Hector, Priam and Helen of Troy.

Other attractions

If you’ve had your fill of history, this area also has some lovely beaches and plenty of other attractions. There are also some great opportunities for enjoying a little luxury. Turkey has some great golf and fitness hotels and some of these can be found in the Canakkale area.
Once a few rounds and saunas have re-charged your batteries, you may wish to look at Assos, where Aristotle had his School of Logic and Reasoning, and the ancient Temple of Athena from the 6th century BC, which has incredible views.

There’s not much doubt that, when it comes to glamour and an international reputation for luxury, Turkey’s capital of Ankara tends to have to live somewhat in the shadow of the rather more famous Istanbul. This though, is a pity, as Ankara has unique charms of its own.

The origin

Ankara is an ancient city and, as for much of Turkey, has been occupied or ruled by many different peoples down the centuries. Many of the great civilisations of Europe or the Middle East have passed this way, including the Hittites, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Turks and Mongols. It was known for many centuries, in Europe, as ‘Angora’ and is the origin of angora wool, cats, goats and rabbits.

Although a vast and influential city during parts of classical and early medieval history, by the start of the 20th century it had declined to something of a moderately sized backwater town of Ottoman Turkey. By the early 1920s, Turkey was making the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the modern Republic it is today and Ankara was chosen as its new capital, replacing Istanbul (Constantinople) in the process. The reasons for this relate to the politics of time and Istanbul’s powerful associations with the old Ottoman regime, however, it was a very big boost to the city, which started its growth to the major metropolis of today.

Historical Turkey

As you might expect given 5000 years of history, there are many things to see in this great city.

A traditional place to start is the citadel – the most ancient part of the city dating back to well before the Romans. There is a great selection of ancient architecture and traditional Turkish housing and you’ll also find some fine restaurants serving local dishes.

The ‘Temple of Augustus and Rome’ is another ‘must’ if you enjoy ancient history. The emperor Augustus is interesting for many reasons, not the least of which is that prior to his death he wrote his own form of ‘autobiography’ (called the ‘Res Gestae’) in which he gives a very romanticised and highly sanitised list of his lifetime’s achievements – the best intact ‘in situ’ copy of this is inscribed in this temple.

It is worth making the effort to see the Roman baths, theatre, and the column of Julian.
There are also several beautiful and historically interesting mosques, of which the largest (and surprisingly most recent, dating to the 1980s) is the Kocatepe Mosque, which is exceptionally beautiful and built in the Ottoman style.

It would also be a tragedy to miss The Museum of The Anatolian Civilisations. They have a fantastic range of exhibits covering many different civilisations over thousands of years. If you love history and archaeology, this will be for you.

Fun-loving Turkey

Of course, not even the most avid lover of ancient history will be able to spend all of their time in museums or walking around sites. That’s when Ankara’s famous café culture and laid-back style will appeal, as you relax and simply watch the world go by. There are also great shopping opportunities here for locally produced goods – and it may be far less frenetic than a similar expedition in Istanbul.

Luxury Turkey

When it comes to luxury, Turkey, and Ankara in particular, can more than hold its own on the world stage. The city has some very comfortable and luxurious hotels – as you would expect in any modern capital city. You can enjoy the surrounds of your charming luxury hotel or indulge in some pampering spa treatment – and when it comes to luxury, Turkey serves up more than its fair share of mouth-watering world-class cuisine in Ankara.

So, if you’d like a holiday that combines history, culture and luxury. Turkey can provide all this aplenty in the fantastic city of Ankara.

When one speaks of luxury Turkey holidays, there might be a slight danger that the phrase is associated with stuffiness and formality. Of course, there is nothing wrong with formality on holiday – if that is what you enjoy and are seeking. If you are, then Turkey offers a range of top-class, sophisticated hotels that can offer you the very highest standards of international service and protocol.

Yet what makes Turkey particularly attractive is that, unlike in some other countries, luxury Turkey holidays do not necessarily equate with such formality. Take, for example, the resort of Belek. This town, with its magnificent beach and fascinating local history, also offers a wide range of four and five-star hotels. All of these offer the sort of comfort and style you would expect from quality hotels, but without the obligatory formality that may characterise five-star hotels in other countries.

For example, if you have just spent the day exploring the magnificently preserved Roman ruins of Perge, then you may appreciate a hotel that will offer you the utmost in luxurious comfort but without, for example, the obligation for formal dress at all times. As a general rule, luxury Turkey holidays can be pretty laid-back affairs. The Turkish people value friendliness and hospitality rather than the rigid constraints that can sometimes be the norm of a luxury escape in some other countries.

In terms of international tourist destinations, although Turkey has been rapidly developing for some years, it still remains a relative newcomer to the international holiday scene.

What this means, is that on luxury Turkey holidays it is still possible to find true relaxation and the opportunity to explore a culture that has not been irretrievably damaged by the progress of tourism. Even in some of the longest established Turkish holiday destinations, when strolling around the bazaars you will quickly realise that you are enjoying an authentic culture and not a contrived touristic experience.

This is one of the huge attractions of this beautiful country: you can be staying in a luxury hotel in Istanbul where just outside the door there is all the appearances of a modern western city; yet you can be staying in an equally luxurious hotel in another part of the city, and outside the culture is clearly one that is predominantly Asian in character.

There cannot be many countries in the world where it remains possible to have a five-star luxury holiday that has been designed and delivered entirely in the original and authentic culture of the country concerned. Yet on luxury Turkey holidays, this is exactly what can be achieved.

Nigel Colley is the Managing Director for All Inclusive Holidays, which specialises in luxury Turkey holidays .

What gives Belek all inclusive holidays an advantage over some other destinations?
It’s simple – variety!

Golf and escaping golf

Even the most dedicated golfers will sometimes admit sotto-voce (though rarely in the presence of others golfers and absolutely never in a clubhouse) that they can sometimes have too much golf. If that sounds like sacrilege, well, perhaps if you have been on holiday in a golfing centre where there is not much else to do locally but to play golf, then you may know what that sentiment is about.

Much as we all love the game, there are other things in life and some of us prefer to keep our golfing enthusiasm running at the highest levels by making sure that we don’t golf to excess on holiday. Yes, certainly the multiple courses locally in Belek are built and maintained to a superb standard. Several of them are officially described as “demanding” and some holes are fiendishly clever. Yet however many days you’re drawn to the greens and fairways, there may be times when you’d like to do something else just by way of a change. That’s why Belek all inclusive holidays are different, even though they can be built around the basic structure of a golfing holiday. You can, if you wish, do a vast number of ‘other things’ that are either on your doorstep or close by.

History

Belek is located on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast – one of the ancient world’s main highways.

So many civilisations have come and gone through this area over the passing millennia that it is impossible to name them all. Of course, two of the more famous were the Greeks and Romans, and they have both left many traces visible today in fantastic nearby sites such as Perge, Side and Aspendos. A visit to the museum in the regional capital of Antalya is also well worth the time spent.

The sea

Belek all inclusive holidays also have the benefit of being based around what is arguably Turkey’s best beach. Miles of excellent sand and crystal clean waters mean that there is a large selection of beach and water sports activities to choose from.

Turkey and its people

One of the biggest attractions of this resort is that it is in Turkey. Few local populations are as welcoming to visitors as the Turks. Belek all inclusive holidays offer not only the possibility of some great golfing and water sports, but also the chance to experience a unique culture. Visiting some of the local towns and bartering in the bazaars is an experience not to be missed. Who knows, you may pick up some great golfing bargains if you’re feeling withdrawal symptoms after a few hours away!

It can be hard to decide on your itinerary when you’re contemplating five star holidays in Turkey. Where to go, what to see, what to do? Many visitors can be overwhelmed and lose track of their holiday plans when faced with the richness of Turkey’s history and the vibrancy of its culture. There’s nothing wrong with that!

For those who want more of a focused holiday, and want to make time to visit all the sites they’ve read or heard about, it is important to consider the specific destination of your Turkish holiday carefully. Here are three of our top spots in Turkey that are certainly worth a visit, for sports, history, and the beautiful Turkish architecture.

The Ataturk Olympic Stadium

For all the sports fans of Turkey, nothing beats a visit to the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, the largest capacity stadium in Turkey. The stadium has been home to the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final, which made it an instant hit with football fans from many different nations. It’s also been the place to witness massive music acts live, such as U2’s concert there in 2010. It’s well worth having a look to see if any teams or bands of interest to you are playing in the stadium while you’re on your five star holidays in Turkey.

The Grand Bazaar

If you want to experience Turkey’s history outside of a museum, the Grand Bazaar is the place to go on your five star holidays in Turkey. With nearly 60 covered streets and 4,000 shops, the Grand Bazaar is a bustling and vibrant location, and a wonderful place to spend an afternoon hunting for keepsakes and mementos. However, it’s also a window into Turkey’s rich history, being one of the oldest covered markets in the world. The Grand Bazaar was originally opened in 1461, and it was well known for its pottery, jewellery, spices, and carpet shops – much like it still is today.

The Galata Tower

If you’re interested in the beautiful architecture of Istanbul, there’s no better way to see it than up close and personal on your five star holidays in Turkey. The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata district, and is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city. It affords anyone willing to journey to the top a beautiful panoramic view over Istanbul. Standing 66 metres tall, the tower was originally built in 1348, and was the apex of the fortifications surrounding the ancient Genoese citadel.

For those interested in making an archaeological discovery on their all inclusive holidays in Belek, there’s a unique attraction nearby – the ancient Greek city of Perga on the southwestern coast of Turkey.

Perga is quite an experience for a visitor interested in uncovering a little of Turkey’s classical history; during the Hellenistic period, Perga was one of the richest and most beautiful cities of the ancient world. It might not look like much during your modern-day visit, but the archeologically minded will certainly find a lot to inspire them. Especially noted for its ornate and beautiful temple to the goddess Artemis, Perga was also home to famous ancient Greek mathematician Apollonius of Perga.

Apollonius of Perga… and Cones

Apollonius of Perga will be of note to any mathematicians or geometry experts visiting Turkey on all inclusive holidays in Belek. Apollonius was a Greek geometer and astronomer whose theories and teachings influenced many other later scholars, including Ptolemy, Isaac Newton, and even Rene Descartes. It isn’t surprising he contributed to this prestigious academic lineage, himself being a pupil of the noted Archimedes. It was Apollonius who coined the terms ‘parabola’ and ‘ellipse’, and came up with the hypothesis of ‘eccentric orbits’ to explain the apparent motion of the planets and the varying speed of the moon which he observed. In fact, the crater on the moon named Apollonius is named in his honour.

Blessed By The Goddess

Perga was noted for its temple to the goddess Artemis, one of the most widely worshipped of the ancient Greek deities. Many many visitors on all inclusive holidays in Belek are drawn to the site to further their understanding of the Greek pantheon. Some scholars believe the name Artemis, and the whole idea of the deity herself, actually originated in pre-Greek times from some mysterious unknown source. In classical Greek mythology, however, Artemis was usually described as the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and was known as the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, childbirth, virginity, and young girls. She was often depicted by artists as a huntress equipped for her work with a bow and arrows.

A Tumultuous History

Perga itself was situated inland as protection against roving pirate bands that terrorised and plundered that stretch of the Mediterranean. In 333 BC, the armies of conqueror Alexander the Great arrived in Perga during his war of conquest against the Persians. Far from being treated as a hostile invader, Alexander’s efforts were well received – the city sent out guides to lead his armies into the city.

Roman rule began long after Alexander’s time, in 188 BC, and the Romans are responsible for most of the archaeological ruins visitors on their all inclusive holidays to Belek can see today. After the collapse of the Roman Empire. Perga remained inhabited until Seljuk times, before being gradually abandoned. A sad fate for such a noble city!

All inclusive holidays in Belek are not complete without a visit to the ancient city of Aspendus in Pamphylia. It boasts some wonderfully preserved ancient Greek architecture and a wealth of history including that of the Greeks, the Romans, the Seljuks and finally the Turks.

The City

Aspendus was an extremely important city during the 5th century B.C, enjoying affluence as a trading hub for products such as salt, oil and wool. After a period of Roman rule, the city began a steep decline into obscurity, and by the Byzantine era was a shadow of its former self. Today, however, it has gained popularity as an important archaeological site and is definitely a ‘must see’ on any itinerary for all inclusive holidays in Belek.

The Theatre

One of the best-preserved theatres of antiquities is amid the ruins of the ancient city of Asepndus, and if you are looking for a bit of history on your all inclusive holidays in Belek, then this is somewhere you should take time to visit. Zenon, the Greek architect and native of the city, designed and built this wonderful structure in 1553 during the reign of Marcus Aurelius.
The theatre has a diameter of 96 metres and provided 7,000 seats for the masses living in the city at that time. The theatre remained true to the Hellenistic traditions, and part of the building leans against the hill where the citadel stood, with the rest built on arches.

From the Seljuks to Today

During the time of the Seljuks, who kept up the repairs, the theatre was used as a caravansary then converted into a palace in the 13th century, by the Seljuks of Rum. The constant utilisation of the building may be the reason why it has remained so well preserved. It makes for a popular tourist attraction for those on all inclusive holidays in Belek. Until recently, the theatre was still used for concerts, festivals and many other different events; but the results of trying to accommodate modern technology in such an ancient building have taken their toll. The Turkish authorities have now built a new open-air arena to host such events, and the theatre is finally taking a well-earned rest.

While in Aspendus you can also visit the ancient remains of the city’s basilica – Nymphaeum and Agora. There is also a Roman aqueduct that runs for 15 kilometres and the Roman Eurymedon Bridge, reconstructed in the 13th century.

So, if it’s history that interests you on an all inclusive holidays in Belek, a visit to Aspendus will satisfy the needs of even the most avid history buff!

There are plenty of things to see and do in the bustling city of Istanbul. It’s often difficult to decide on an itinerary when there are so many historical and architectural wonders on offer. Turkey tours make the most of the unique and fascinating buildings and culture of Istanbul, and feature some amazing locations throughout the city. One of these is the legendary Topkapi Palace, the official residence of the Ottoman Sultans for over 400 years. It’s a spectacular sight, and an amazing chance for visitors to set foot inside an iconic piece of Turkish history.

Building

After the Ottoman conquest in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II ordered the construction of a new palace in 1459. It grew almost organically, with the highest point of the promontory it was built upon reserved for his private quarters, and other buildings stretching down towards the shores of the Bosphorus. Unlike other comparable royal residences, Topkapi Palace developed over the course of centuries, with new Sultans adding or removing buildings and features as they saw fit. Many of the most dynamic changes happened during the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in 1520-1560 under Sultan Suleyman, who wanted the expansion and power of the Ottoman Empire to be reflected in his residence, transforming it into the architectural highlight of many cultural Turkey tours.

Residents

It is estimated that there were originally 700 to 800 residents of Topkapi Palace when it was first constructed, but over time the population grew (necessitating the expansion of the palace) to 5,000, and double that number on significant festival days. It might not seem so crowded on your Turkey tours when you consider this figure! Chief amongst the residents were the Janissaries, elite fighters in the Sultan’s army. Special laws meant that they were cut off from the society of the time, and were even forbidden to marry. This type of discipline made them a fighting force to be feared throughout Europe.

The Harem

Topkapi Palace was also home to the ‘Harem’, derived from a word meaning ‘forbidden’ in the Arabic language. The Harem was a complex of rooms and dwellings belonging to the wives, concubines, and children of the Sultan, guarded by eunuchs.

There’s no better complement to discovering Turkey’s rich history and culture than being able to sample some of the finest Turkish dishes while you do so. Turkey tours are wonderful opportunities to try some of the finest and most delicious food you’ll ever taste while on holiday. The high quality and simple ingredients used in Turkish cooking often make meals a pleasant surprise, and you’re guaranteed to find one dish you absolutely fall in love with. Here are a few of our favourites.

Koftë

Koftë (or Turkish meatballs) can be found in all shapes and sizes, and in different regions of Turkey they’re prepared and cooked differently. Made from finely ground meat, onions, and different spices, whether they’re fried, baked, or boiled, they make a tasty treat during Turkey tours. Wherever you venture in Turkey, it’s a great idea to find out what the local koftë specialty dish is and give it a try. Whether it’s cooked with green peppers, sliced potatoes or tomatoes, it’s sure to be a meal you won’t forget.

Börek

One Turkish tradition states that no woman should marry unless she has mastered the art of making börek! This dish is made from paper-thin pastry, yufka, which is then rolled or stacked in layers with various types of fillings, such as potatoes, spinach, meats and cheeses, and more. You’ll find börek all over Turkey and, as they’re light, they’re easy to eat on the go, making them the perfect snack to keep you energised on your Turkey tours.

Iskender Kebab

Just one of a large number of different kebabs you will discover on Turkey tours, this particular variety comes from Bursa in north-western Turkey. Made with thinly-sliced lamb or beef, the kebab is topped with tomato sauce and boiling butter, all over sliced pide (or pita) bread. Usually served with a side helping of yoghurt, this is one kebab that is almost certain to have anyone falling in love with it at first taste.

Lokum

Lokum (or as it is perhaps better known, Turkish delight) is a soft dessert that comes in a dazzling variety of flavours – almost anything can be added to these soft candies to create a unique flavour. Walnuts, pistachios, almonds, oranges, clotted cream, and of course chocolate can all be used, though the original rosewater recipe is still a firm favourite. The original name, Rahat Lokum, meant ‘comfortable morsel’, on account of the ease of chewing the sweet confection. The highlight of many people’s Turkey tours, genuine lokum makes a wonderful dessert after a meal at the end of a long day.

Becoming ever more popular for family holidays, Turkey has some fascinating sights and experiences to offer its visitors, not least of which are its famous Whirling Dervishes.

Who are the Whirling Dervishes?

Although in modern day terminology we might use the term Whirling Dervish of someone who is seen to be dashing about hurriedly to get things done; the real Whirling Dervishes are members of the Mevlevi Order which was founded in the city of Konya in present day Turkey by the followers of 13th century poet, theologian and mystic Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi-Rumi (also known as Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi). In what is essentially an act of worship, the Mevlevi Dervishes in their long white costumes, perform their whirling dance as part of the ceremony which is known as Sema and also includes singing, dancing, playing musical instruments and poetry recitals. For those taking family holidays in Turkey, it is an experience not to be missed.

Why do the Mevlevi Dervishes whirl?

It is said that the practice of whirling originated from Balkhi-Rumi’s occasional habit of spinning around in sheer joy and ecstasy in the streets of Konya, and that the aim of turning first slowly and then with ever-increasing speed is to put the dancers into a trance-like or meditative state which takes them closer to God. As they perform this mesmerising ritual, they are accompanied by chanting and music, and those attending one of their performances during their family holidays in Turkey are certain to be awestruck and captivated by the sheer speed at which they move.

Are the Mevlevi the only order of Dervishes?

As visitors on family holidays to Turkey will no doubt learn, the Mevlevi,or Whirling Dervishes, were only one of many orders of Dervishes (brotherhoods or religious sects known for their extreme poverty and austerity) to exist in latter day Persia; the Bektashi order being another of the very famous ones. Throughout the centuries, however, successive rulers put an end to all but the Mevlevi order. It belongs to the orthodox mainstream of Islam, allowing it to survive, albeit mainly because the organisation was a non-political one and the Sema ceremony is such a tourist attraction. Different orders practised their own separate and distinct rituals which also included dancing, but the Mevlevi order was unique in its whirling dances.

Where to go to see the Whirling Dervishes

As the home of the Whirling Dervishes, the city of Konya is one of the places where visitors on family holidays in Turkey can take in the sight of this famous Sema dance and December 17th, the anniversary of the death of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi, is one of the best times to visit. The annual Mevlana Commemoration Festival takes place at the Mevlana Cultural Centre in the city and ceremonies take place during the course of the week from the 10th to 17th of the month. Visitors to Istanbul can also see displays of the Whirling Dervishes at the Galata Mevlevihanesi (closed for restoration until December 2010), and various other venues throughout the city.

During your family holidays, Turkey has plenty of traditional transport options to offer you, including car hire, buses and trains; and that’s without even mentioning the plane that you flew in on. But there are other ways to travel around Turkey, so why not treat yourself to a slightly more unusual mode of transport during your family holidays? Turkey has plenty of nooks and crannies to explore that you may not be able to reach by public transport.

Riding the Rickshaws

Rickshaws are a very common sight in countries such as Thailand and India, but until now they have not been so frequently spotted in Turkey. However, a new environmental programme that has been initiated in popular resorts such as Kalkan, means that the human-powered taxis will be a regular feature from now on. Sporting similar decor to the yellow taxis that you have probably taken on family holidays, Turkey’s rickshaws will make for a cheaper and more exciting way of getting around. And if you’re worried about the driver struggling with the heat, don’t be! The rickshaws work with a technology that stores energy generated when travelling on flat or downhill terrain in a battery, so that it can be released when travelling uphill. This fun form of transport allows you to enjoy the fresh air rather than leaving you stifled in a hot car.

Sit Yourself on a Scooter

Though the younger members of the family might have to ride pillion for this activity, scooters are a great way to explore on your family holidays. Turkey is brimming with companies that will hire out scooters that allow you to plan both day long outings, and longer excursions that go further afield. The nifty nature of scooters helps you to travel through traffic quickly and easily, meaning that you spend less of your day on the road and more sightseeing. However, the real benefit of scooter travel is that you will be able to access wonderful hidden and out of the way parts of the countryside that are slightly more difficult to reach by car. And rather than catching glimpses of the view through the window, you will have a whole landscape just the other side of your helmet.

Drive in a Dolmus

For a real taste of the Turkish atmosphere, why not take a drive in a Dolmus bus? The Turkish Dolmus is slightly reminiscent of a minibus, and serves the coastal areas of the country. But don’t expect it to be like the buses you’re used to at home. The Dolmus bus doesn’t stop at regular, pre-planned stops, but picks people up along the way until it is full. To pay for the bus, you must work out your fare from the sheets, and pass your money forwards hand-to-hand via the other passengers on the bus. The most exciting part is getting the bus to stop where you would like to get off – the most effective way being to shout rather loudly so that the bus driver can hear you. Though this mode of transport might seem slightly haphazard for your family holidays, Turkey’s Dolmus bus is a great deal of fun and is certainly an experience you won’t forget.

So, when it comes to travelling around on your family holidays, Turkey transport can be anything but traditional.

When you’re on family holidays, Turkey’s warm temperatures along with the enormous range of activities available can leave you with quite a thirst. So why not try one of these traditional Turkish tipples below. With alcoholic beverages for the adults to enjoy, and plenty of non-alcoholic options for the kids, there is something for everyone to wet their whistle with.

For the Adults – Turkish Coffee

Though Turkish coffee uses the same coffee beans as any other variation of coffee, the difference is in the method of production. If you need a shot of caffeine on your family holidays, Turkey’s way of making coffee will ensure that you get it. It is prepared by boiling roasted coffee beans that have been ground into a fine powder in a ‘cezve’ (or pot) of water; the coffee is then poured into a cup complete with sugar and the dregs, which then settle. This method of production results in a very dark, strong cup of coffee with a beautifully sweet aftertaste.

For the Kids – Apricot Juice

Apricot juice, known as ‘kayisi suyu’ is not only delicious tasting, but it is also very rehydrating. A pleasant change from the orange or apple juice the kids are used to drinking at home, a glass of apricot juice will not only quench their thirst but expand their tastes when it comes to fruits. After a long day in the hot sun on your family holidays, Turkey’s large and delicious apricots have never tasted better than they do in a glass over plenty of ice.

For the Adults – Ihlamur

Ihlamur is a herbal tea, which is more commonly known as linden flower tea. Made from the dried leaves of lime flowers, the tea is renowned for its healing properties, and is often used to cure maladies such as upset stomachs, nerves, or coughs and colds. So if you feel slightly queasy as you get used to the different foods you’re eating, or you’re feeling uncomfortable about the flight home, this is just the drink for you. Perfect for keeping you healthy and balanced while you’re on your family holidays, Turkey’s finest herbal tea is not only useful, but also very pleasant and sweet tasting.

For the Kids – Ayran

Ayran is a salty, yoghurt-based drink that is particularly good for rehydration due to its high water content. Though the sound of this drink may not instantly appeal to the kids, when they see a tankard of Ayran with its frothy head over-spilling, they will more than likely want to have a taste. Often flavoured with ingredients such as mint or cucumber, Ayran is not only good for the digestive system, but tastes delicious.

For the Adults – Raki

Raki is something you are bound to come across on your family holidays. Turkey’s national drink, this spirit is not only strong, but incredibly tasty. Made from grapes, the spirit is flavoured with aniseed and often served alongside fish or mezze dishes as an appetiser. It can be drunk neat, or poured over cold water and ice depending on whether the children have been put to bed yet or not. This is certainly a drink which captures the Turkish spirit.

So, if you’ve worked up quite a thirst on your family holidays, Turkey’s traditional beverages are just the thing to cool you down and rehydrate you. With something for everyone to enjoy, you will never be stuck for something to drink in Turkey.

If you’re heading off on your Mediterranean family holidays, Turkey is more than likely to be one of your first choices. The ubiquitous trio of sun, sea and sand are obviously the biggest draw cards, but Turkey has a lot more to offer than that. Not only is Turkey steeped in a fascinating history (the remnants of which are some of the most important archaeological signposts in the world), it also has a proud and colourful culture. It’s not hard to shop, eat and drink like a local on your family holidays; Turkey has some of the most wonderful shops and bazaars you will ever see. If you’re visiting Istanbul, whether you’re looking for food, souvenirs, spices or art you will find a market tucked around every corner.

The Grand Bazaar Istanbul

The Big Daddy of all markets, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is home to over 5000 shops and stalls. If you can’t find it in the Grand Bazaar, it simply doesn’t exist. Gold and silver jewellery, fabulously exotic antiques, metal and copper object-d’art, leather goods and hand-painted ceramics are just a selection of the treasures you can find. When you are travelling with children on your family holidays, Turkey’s biggest undercover bazaar is a fascinating and exciting attraction for kids of all ages. They will love the smells and sounds of the bustling bazaar. The Turkish people love children, so they will be entertained and embraced by the locals. While it is a good idea to stay close and keep tabs on the family, the Grand Bazaar has a safe and friendly atmosphere and is an ideal day out in Istanbul.

The Spice Market Istanbul

Whilst not strictly for the children, an excursion to the wonderfully aromatic Spice Market in Istanbul should still be included in the itinerary of your family holidays. Turkey is renowned for its exotic spices, fruits and nuts and these markets will have your head spinning and your mouth salivating with the selection on display. The first thing that hits you is obviously the smell, which permeates every nook and cranny of the markets creating a delightful, if at times overpowering, scent. Row upon row of jewel-coloured spices line the stalls in huge baskets and the aisles are crowded with locals jostling for the lowest prices. As with any market in Turkey, the first price is never the last price and haggling is a way of life, so don’t be shy to ask for a discount. Why not involve the children in the fun of purchasing some precious spices to take home as a souvenir – you may find they get a better price than you!

Tahtakale Market District

Situated in between the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Markets, the Tahtakale Market District is the most authentic taste of Turkey you will find. Almost exclusively patronised by locals, the streets of the district are lined with shops and stalls selling everything from handkerchiefs, beads, food stuffs, luggage, clothing, kitchen utensils, wooden furniture and toys, to mosque decorations and even firearms. A fabulous place to visit on your family holidays, Turkey’s genuine way of life is on display through the sights, sounds and colours of the Tahtakale Market District.

There is so much to see and do and whether you choose to holiday in the exotic capital Istanbul, or opt for a more relaxing stay in a coastal resort, family holidays to Turkey will never disappoint. One of the best things about Turkey is its accessibility and no matter where you stay, even those with young families will find it easy to explore the neighbouring areas. Olu Deniz is one of the most popular family resorts in the Aegean and an ideal place to base yourself; and if you do find yourself there on your family holidays, Turkey has another little secret up her sleeve – Fethiye.

Fethiye is only a short distance from the more popular resorts along the Turkish coast, but some people prefer its more relaxed atmosphere for their family holidays. Turkey is renowned for its hospitality and the warm welcome it extends to visitors, and nowhere is this more evident than Fethiye. Whilst retaining an authentic and traditional feel, there is still enough to do to keep the entire family entertained. Whether your family is into sun-worshipping and sailing, or history and horse-riding, Fethiye can take care of everyone.

Along the Waterfront

You may choose to spend your entire family holiday on the beach and in Fethiye, the temptation to do just that is extremely great! Although sunbathing and swimming will be high on the agenda of family holidays, Turkey offers more than just a dip in the sea and a paddle in the shallows. Around Fethyie you will discover not only some of the most stunning beaches on the Turkish Coast, you will also find some of the most enjoyable ways to maximise your fun in the sun. Diving, snorkelling, kayaking and paragliding are just some of the activities on offer and, coupled with the wide sandy beaches and warm inviting waters, are an irresistible option.

Of course, if parents want to escape for a little ‘me time’ on their family holidays in Turkey, they can always leave the kids to their own devices and take a relaxing stroll around the harbour in Fethiye. With a charming backdrop of bobbing yachts against the glittering azure ocean, you can while away an afternoon or an evening in a tiny restaurant and watch the locals go about their business.

Delve into History

In its day, Fethiye was one of the most significant towns on the Lycian Way. Formerly namedTelmessos, it was the centre of prophecy and a bustling centre of culture. Wherever you base yourself for your family holidays, Turkey will astound you with a diverse and rich tapestry of history and Fethiye is no exception. The entire family can enjoy excursions to visit the many fascinating relics dotted around the town. A history lesson can take on a whole new meaning when you get to experience the actual site of such important events, and you will have no trouble getting the children to come along. Of particular interest in Fethiye is the amazing rock tomb of Amyntas with its impressive facade cut into the hillside behind the town; as well as many other smaller sarcophagi in the unique Lycian style which date back to the 4th Century.

If you’re looking for accommodation for your family holidays, Turkey has a range of weird and wonderful places to stay that will make your holidays stand out in your memory for many years to come. So sure, spend some of your trip in that nice hotel with the pool and the beach close by; but why not take a couple of nights to explore somewhere a little different.

Gamirasu Cave Hotel

You may already be staying at a hotel but for a night to remember on your family holidays, Turkey’s Gamirasu Cave Hotel is well worth a visit. The hotel is found within an old Byzantine monastic complex, nestled in a valley where peace and tranquillity prevail. On arrival, stretch your legs and make the most of the quiet, country air on the 7 kilometre trail which stretches from the hotel down to the river. Or make the most of the wide, open spaces in the walled gardens of the monastery and build up your appetite for dinner. One of the hotel’s highlights is the authentic Turkish cuisine that is served for both dinner and breakfast, using ingredients that are sourced from the local area as much as is possible. This hotel, dug out of volcanic rock, is certainly a piece of Turkish paradise.

Hole up in the Homestays

If you want to infuse a bit of culture into your family holidays, Turkey’s traditional lifestyle is a good place to start. All kids like camping, so you can be sure that they will enjoy the experience of lodging in a homestay. Village accommodation is often opened to visitors by farming families, who will welcome you into their nomadic tents with open arms and good traditional Turkish fare. More exciting and interactive than any trip to a petting zoo or farm, the farmers will allow you to have a go at milking their sheep and rolling the bread for breakfast. Once you’ve had a taste of the traditional lifestyle and made some life-long friends, you can bed down on home-made mattresses in the tents. Or, for those who would rather sleep under the stars, mattresses will be arranged around a dung-burning fire, keeping you warm as you watch out for shooting stars.

Wake up to the Waves

One of the main reasons to visit this beautiful country is to make the most of the warm waters on your family holidays. Turkey boasts some of the clearest and bluest waters you will ever see, so why not spend a night floating out on the ocean? Gulet cruises are run from all over Turkey, and can be as long or as short as you like. During the day, enjoy jumping off the deck into the sea, or take a canoe into the numerous coves along the coastline and explore the shores. You might even grab a snorkel and sample the sea life in the shallows. As the sun goes down, climb aboard and enjoy the food and entertainment provided by the crew as you look forward to waking up to the sounds of the waves the next morning.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit different to stay on your family holidays, Turkey has plenty of unusual but incredible accommodation to choose from.

In terms of family holidays, Turkey is about as good as it gets. With a combination of sun, sea and sand that will keep every member of the family in the holiday mood, this holiday is likely to be one that is remembered. But why not throw in a few unforgettable experiences, just to make sure that it goes down in family history.

White Water Rafting

The Coruh River in Turkey has long been rated one of the world’s top ten rafting rivers by professional rafters. A trip downstream is definitely something that you won’t forget in a hurry. No prior experience is required so this is an adventure suitable for every member of the family, provided they are able to swim. The route down the river is fast and thrilling in places, particularly when you come up against the rapids. However, there are also calmer stretches of water, during which you can enjoy the stunning scenery of the mountain passes through which the river runs. For a memorable excursion to remember on your family holidays, Turkey’s most impressive river is the place to go.

Hot Air Ballooning

If you want to see the country from a slightly different perspective on your family holidays, Turkey never looks better than when you’re looking down on her from above. Hot air ballooning is available in the area of Cappadocia, in central Anatolia, and is well worth a morning or afternoon of your holiday. High up in the sky you can look down and see the distinctive landscapes, spotting the natural features that have been shaped by wind, weather, and volcanic eruptions. You’ll also see remnants of the various histories that Turkey has collected over the years, with landmarks harking back to the Hittites, the Byzantines, and even the early Christians. What better way to see Turkey, than with a bird’s eye view? This will be an addition to your holiday that will not be forgotten in a hurry.

The Whirling Dervishes

One way to ensure that your family holidays in Turkey are never forgotten, is to make sure you really see something of the culture. What better way to discern what the real Turkey is like than through dance? If you’re lucky enough to see a ceremony put on by the Whirling Dervishes, either in Konya or Istanbul, you will begin to wish you were from Turkey yourself. The Whirling Dervishes are members of the Mevlevi Order, and performers of the famous ‘Sema’ dance. As they dance around you in a whirlwind, you cannot fail to appreciate the grace and skill of their movements, which symbolise the human being’s spiritual journey upwards, powered by love and intelligence to reach perfection. This is a show that will have all members of the family enraptured.

So for family holidays, Turkey really is the place to go. Relax in the sun, bathe in the sea and bask on the sand, but before you head home be sure to try any one of these once in a lifetime experiences.

For family holidays, Turkey might sound like a relaxing prospect; the chance to unwind, soak up the sun and take in all the local attractions. However, the reality can sometimes very different to the daydream. Finding a destination that has enough to entertain the children, with a good mix of activities to keep mum and dad interested can be a tricky task. Luckily, we’ve found the perfect destination in Kusadasi.

Why it’s great for children…

The long sandy beach is a child’s paradise and the white powdery sand is ideal for building sandcastles. But whilst we all know that most children could happily sit on the beach for hours building sand palaces, the resort of Kusadasi has plenty to drag them away. Not least the azure blue ocean which offers a haven of water-sports, perfect for slightly older children. There are banana boat rides, jet skiing and yachting for the active, whilst the resort also offers three fantastic water parks. One of the water parks, Adaland claims to be the largest in Europe and its fantastic dolphin shows ensures that it stands out from the competition. In between the dolphin displays there are plenty of log flume rides to keep the children entertained, from the wild kamikaze winder to the slightly gentler rainbow ride. On your family holidays, Turkey be sure to check out the park’s newest addition, Sea Park. Here children and adults can snorkel alongside tropical fish and even take part in a specialised dolphin encounter program.

Why it’s great for Dads….

Dads can be tricky when it comes to arranging family holidays, Turkey however has something for everyone. While mum is often perfectly content to spend hours sunbathing on the beach with the latest romantic novel, it’s fair to say that dads are usually after something a little more cultural. Therefore, Kusadasi is situated in the perfect location; Epheseus, Pammukale and Didyma are all less than a few hours’ drive away from the main resort. Epheseus is the closest historic attraction and it’s safe to say that a visit to Kusadasi just isn’t complete without taking a day trip. Another activity that’s bound to appeal to fathers and sons alike is the adrenaline-packed Jeep Safari.

This day-long action packed adventure takes in the mountains and valleys of Sirince and contains frequent water fights between the other jeeps. The Jeep Safari finishes at the Cave of Zeus, where the deep blue mineral water inside the cave makes it the perfect place to cool off at the end of an adrenaline packed day.

Why it’s great for Mums…..

The chance to relax and escape from the stresses and strains of daily life is why mums love family holidays. Turkey has plenty of sandy beaches for mums to unwind on, but whilst sunbathing on the beach may be all very well, if mums want proper relaxation then nothing beats an authentic Turkish bath experience. Whilst laid on a stone slab, a tellak will scrub and exfoliate your skin with a coarse mitt and some thick black soap. A good tip is to visit the hamman on the first day of your holiday as the exfoliation will prepare mum’s skin for the sun, allowing her to tan more easily. The perfect ending to Turkey family holidays is a family meal at an attractive local restaurant. Try Bul Bul for delicious meze and succulent kebabs and then end your evening at the Dejazar Wine Bar which offers spectacular views out over the marina.

When looking for the ideal place for family holidays, Turkey is the obvious choice. With a great tourism infrastructure in place, even the tiniest of villages in Turkey will be able to accommodate you and your family with a warm and genuine welcome. Being practical however is a consideration for any holiday involving the entire family, and there are certain things that make one place more suitable than another. Entertainment, accommodation, cuisine and accessibility are all aspects that affect a location’s suitability for family holidays. Turkey ticks every box when examining its family-friendliness so here are a few locations which top the bill.

Marmaris

Marmaris, on the south west coast is popular for family holidays in Turkey not only because of its lively atmosphere and stunning location, but also because it is the busiest yacht-charter and sailing resort in the country. So if you and your family are sailing buffs, or want to be, this is the resort for you. But there’s more to Marmaris than fun on the beach. Why not treat the kids to some culture with a day trip to the fascinating city of Ephesus. This incredible archaeological site has been acknowledged as one of the most important in the world and, for the children, the opportunity to explore Ephesus is not only educational but exciting as well. Another day trip from Marmaris is to the unique hot mineral waterfalls of Pamukkale. From snow-white calcified rock pools, warm water cascades from high on the cliffs of the ancient city of Hieropolis. It is a spectacular sight and also very popular for its reputed health-giving properties. But the kids will just love the chance to frolic in the water in these strangely beautiful surrounds.

Bodrum

For family holidays, Turkey’s next favourite choice must be Bodrum. With fabulous beaches and a million things to do both in the water and out, Bodrum also has an air of adventure about it and there are plenty of ways to explore it further. The town itself is a wonderfully mysterious discovery; its tiny cobbled streets and secret lanes will enchant the children. But dig a little deeper and the surprises get even better. Bodrum has its own castle which is a dream come true for children, but as an added bonus, within the Bodrum Castle of the Knights of St John, is housed the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. No ordinary staid museum experience, a visit to this one will leave the kids begging to learn more. Shipwrecks, Knights and the Seventh Wonder of the World all weave together to spell out the history of Bodrum.

Olu Deniz

Not all that long ago, the small but perfectly formed town of Olu Deniz was little more than a sleepy village nestled into a picture-perfect lagoon. Now though, the resort’s relaxed unspoilt appeal is what makes it so popular for family holidays. Turkey is generally very child-friendly, but here in Olu Deniz it is absolute family heaven. The wide, sloping beach leads down to the protected lagoon where the water is virtually wave-free and completely safe. There are also some wonderful gentle hikes ideal for families, which will take you through some of the most spectacular scenery in Turkey. A special favourite with children is an excursion to Butterfly Valley, where you arrive by boat to a hidden beach and wander through meadows filled with butterflies.

Kalkan, located on the stunning Lycian Coast of Turkey, is an unspoilt gem which has not yet been overrun with the masses of tourists who can often ruin the charm of such a place. Despite the size and pace of the town, there is much to appeal about Kalkan. Turkey has an enviable climate and Kalkan’s moderate temperatures mean that even in the winter months it is still a wonderful place to visit. No matter what you come for; be it to sun yourself on the beautiful beaches or simply to soak up the atmosphere of the town’s ancient history, the one thing you will most definitely be tempted by is the shopping in Kalkan. Turkey is renowned for its artisans and you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a souvenir.

Arts and Crafts

The great thing about Kalkan is that shopping is completely stress-free. Not for this town the crowded, bustling streets of a busy seaside resort. You can browse the tiny shops and boutiques at your own pace, and no one is in a hurry in Kalkan. Turkey has long been known for its wonderful jewellery, ceramics, glass works and hand-carved artefacts. You will find all of these in abundance in the shops and stalls amongst the windy streets and alleys of Kalkan. Make a special note to search for the traditional “evil eye”, made from blue glass, which is reputed to ward off any evil spirits.

Turkish Rugs

The incredibly intricate and beautiful kilims and carpets, probably Turkey’s most famous export, are well-known for their excellent craftsmanship and durability. A good quality kilim can last for over a hundred years and you are sure to find your perfect choice in Kalkan. Turkey has many different regions and each area has their own style and story behind the rugs they produce. You will be dazzled by the incredible array of colours and designs available in these beautiful carpets and rugs and it will be hard to decide. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to a magic carpet, you can still by plenty of smaller items like cushions and slippers which are made out of old kilims.

Turkish Delight

This may not be strictly classed as a souvenir, because once you get your hands on some of the delicious traditional sweet, it will probably never make it out of Kalkan. Turkey is the perfect place to have your first taste of Turkish Delight if you’ve never had it before, or to readjust your taste buds if you think it’s going to be anything like that which you get from a box of Quality Street! The authentic version of this delicacy truly earns its name and the delicate rose-water taste is an absolute pleasure. Don’t expect it to come coated in chocolate as you would normally see it; in Kalkan, Turkey’s most famous namesake arrives with a liberal sprinkling of icing sugar instead. If you ARE noble enough to resist eating the lot before you leave town, a block of Turkish Delight is a wonderful gift for someone back home.

Nick Wrightman is the founder and M.D. of The Tapestry Collection, specialist holiday tour operators who can arrange a stay in Kalkan Turkey as well as packages for Crete, Kefalonia and Morocco. The Tapestry Collection includes boutique hotels, villas, exclusive apartments, gulet holidays and riads in a selection of delightful resorts.

Every year, many tourists decide to explore the cultural delights of Turkey. Walks are a fantastic way to see all that the country has to offer, taking you through ancient ruins and bustling towns and along spectacular coastlines. Wherever your walk takes you, there are a few cultural experiences that you simply cannot help but encounter during your time in the country.

Here are three of the best, which will provide you with experiences you’ll be recounting to your friends back home for weeks to come.

Turkish Baths (Hamams)

Turkish baths, or hamams as they are known locally, are found all over Turkey. Walks are a great way to see the country, but they can leave you tired and in need of some rejuvenation. So what better way to get over your stiff joints than by a trip to a Turkish bath?

In the hamam you can relax in the warm, steamy rooms and you can even experience a number of different massages. These can include a foam massage, an exfoliating massage and a luxurious oil massage. Hamams are part of the daily routine for many locals, and you may well find you get quite fond of them as well.

Don’t miss out on visiting a hamam when on a walking holiday in Turkey. Walks may be the best way to see the country, but it’s just as important to treat yourself to a bit of luxury every once in a while.

Turkish Kebabs

Turkey is, for some, the home of kebabs – and not the kind of kebabs that you are likely to find in some late-night joint in a town centre in England. Turkish kebabs are of the highest quality, and will provide you with a culinary treat to remember long after your trip to Turkey. Walks that lead through any town or city are certain to take you past a restaurant or bar serving kebabs. And even if you don’t spot them, just follow your nose; the wonderful spicy aroma wafting out into the street will lead you straight to them.

Kebabs are different all over the country, with most regions having their own specific style. Whether a SiÅ? (shish) kebab, Adana kebab or the well-known (but entirely different) Doner kebab, you are going to give your taste buds a treat when you try any kebab in Turkey.

Turkish Coffee House

In Turkey, walks will allow you to experience both the countryside and the bustling cities alike. But wherever you decide to go, you will never find yourself far from a coffee house selling strong Turkish coffee.

Coffee is an important part of daily life for Turkish people. It still plays a role in many rituals involving prayer and marriage, although not as much as it once did. It is made from a fine powder and the resulting drink is much stronger than you may be used to. Cardamom is sometimes added, and the distinctive taste is something you won’t forget in a hurry.

When you head to Turkey, walks of any type will lead you past one of these coffee houses sooner or later. And if you feel yourself getting tired during your walk, there is no better remedy than a shot of hot strong Turkish coffee to restore your energy levels.

There is no better way to spend quality time with your brood, than a family holiday in Turkey. However, it can be difficult to keep family members of all ages happy throughout the holiday. Here is a foolproof guide to keeping the entire family content during a family trip to Turkey.

Treat the Toddlers

A family holiday in Turkey might well be the very first time that the younger members of the family set foot on foreign turf, and where better to take them? The warm climate and inviting beaches make the perfect introduction to holidaying abroad. Teach them to swim in the privacy of your own pool, and then watch them venture into the big blue sea. Whilst you’re at the beach, you can even help them to build their very first sandcastle. Turkey is the ideal location for a child’s first holiday. The only problem is they’ll be clamouring for the next one the minute you get back.

Talk to the Teenagers

For many parents, taking teenagers on holiday can be something of a worry as it can be difficult to co-ordinate activities that will suit all members of the family. However, a family holiday in Turkey can alleviate those worries. There’s nothing teenagers love more than a trip to the beach. Whilst you entertain the younger children, the teens will be more than happy to work on their tans, or to take to the sea for any one of the many water sports available. Once you’ve exhausted the beach, they’re sure to enjoy a trip into town for a spot of shopping in the bazaars.

Absolve the Adolescents

For the slightly older teenagers on a family holiday in Turkey, who insist that they are adults though you may not agree just yet, try to give them a little freedom. As you’re off out for the day, they may decide they’d rather stay in the lap of luxury at the villa and enjoy the pool, or they may want to go off and explore the local area without the watchful eyes of parents. Why not give them their way for a day? Absolve them of any family responsibilities, and by the end of the holiday you’ll find they’re actively suggesting family excursions they’d like you all to go on. The wonderfully relaxed atmosphere in Turkey means that you can give them the freedom they crave, without worry.

Goals for the Grown Ups

It’s all too easy for parents to forget that while they’re on a family holiday in Turkey, they’re supposed to be relaxing too. As well as planning activities that will please everyone else, be sure to make some time for yourselves as well. Take a day and insist that the whole family does something you like; this might be a long walk, or perhaps an exploration of some Lycian architecture. There is so much fascinating culture to be experienced in Turkey you really can’t go home without having seen it. You might also like to take yourselves away for an evening and enjoy a romantic dinner without the kids. Get the older ones to babysit the young ones, and enjoy a nice bottle of wine with a traditional Turkish dinner, perhaps even followed by a bit of a dance. After all, it’s your holiday too!

So, even though the thought of trying to keep everyone happy on a family holiday in Turkey might fill you with fear, you needn’t worry. This family-friendly destination has plenty to offer people of all ages and you will come back feeling a relaxed and contented close-knit family.

Take to the Water on a Gulet Holiday

There is no better way to enjoy the water than on gulet holidays in Turkey. Spend your days relaxing as you are sailed around the waters surrounding Kalkan, mooring up every so often to explore the harbor fronts of the Turkish coast. But be sure to make the most of the ocean, by spending some time in it as well as on it.

Sailing
If you’re not yet sure whether you’re prone to seasickness or not, gulet holidays are the best way to get your sea legs. Much of the sailing is done with the help of a motor in order to keep to schedule and ensure you get the most out of your trip. However, the Captain will ensure that the sails are hoisted from time to time, to give you a real taste of travelling by water. One of the more comfortable ways to sail, these boats have been adapted from trade to comfort and will see you sailing in style.

Snorkeling
As Kalkan is located on the Turquoise Coast, it is a prime location for snorkeling. Float in the crystal clear waters of the various lagoons that you pass during your voyage, and catch a glimpse of the diverse sea-life. As you snorkel, you can expect to see stunning soft corals, moray eels, octopus, as well as larger fish such as leer-fish, tuna and the ever-impressive dusky grouper.

Canoeing
If you prefer to stay atop of the water rather than in it, why not downsize your dinghy for the day. The majority of boats used for gulet holidays have a sea canoe on board that you can enjoy to your heart’s content. See the shoreline from a different perspective, as you get as close as possible to the beachfronts and coves with a smaller vessel. Take a look over the side of the canoe as you glide over the water, and see the sea-life through the clear waters from above. When you need a break from rowing, lay back and bask in the sunshine before you head back to the boat.

Fishing
Kalkan, the starting point for many gulet holidays, has long been known as a fishing town. However, this claim is not restricted to the locals by any means. Due to the warm temperatures of the water, the best fishing tends to be offshore rather than closer to land. The gulet boat you find yourself on is will have plenty of fishing gear on board, to catch yourself some dinner. So cast your line off the side of the boat, and it will only be a matter of time before there is a bite. Catch enough fish to feed everyone on board and you’re sure to be the Captain’s favourite!

Whether you like to dive right into the water or prefer to stay on board the boat, gulet holidays are an ideal way to enjoy the Turquoise Coast. See Turkey from a different angle as you are sailed along the coastline, making the most of every aspect of being on the water.
