It may be that you think you know the Balearic Islands and Menorca, however, looking at Son Bou holidays may convince you otherwise. The resort is on Menorca’s southern coast and is roughly a 30-minute drive from the island’s capital in Mahon.

At first sight, Son Bou just looks ‘different’. It has a noticeable absence of high-rises and mega-developments, although in fairness, Menorca as an island has generally worked hard to avoid some of the destructive development that its sister islands of Ibiza and Majorca have inflicted upon themselves.

The first thing you’ll notice is a superb sandy beach, stretching away over two kilometres. Many aficionados say that it is the island’s best beach, and it would be hard to argue with that assertion. At one end, in the distance, there are two larger hotels. For the most part, however, the overriding impression is of a very small, laidback and modestly developed resort.

If you are just arriving on day one of your Son Bou holidays, the second thing that is likely to strike you is that it looks and feels like a location designed for the slightly more mature and perhaps even affluent holidaymaker. Sitting a little back from the main resort itself, heading towards the base of some hills that sit behind the town, is the location called San Jaime. This area consists of some nice good standard family-type accommodation and a range of shops, bars and children’s entertainment facilities. The emphasis is on peace and restrained family or mature fun.

Further up the hills behind San Jaime is a residential area consisting mainly of villas and superior accommodation. Some of these will offer excellent facilities and amazing views; though those at the very top may be a rather demanding walk from the sea.

One of the truly great things about Son Bou holidays is that the entire area has a completely unspoilt feel to it. Some of the countryside behind the beach is protected and consists of marsh and scrublands where you will be able to see a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Just a short stroll into the countryside, some of the paths will allow you to see a range of plants and flowers that you are unlikely to come even close to seeing back home (though do remember that the number of species visible or in flower will depend very much upon the time of year).

Son Bou holidays may not suit those looking for a riotous nightlife or special ‘drink until you drop’ nights out. The emphasis is on family holidays and relaxation so if you’re looking to chill out, Son Bou holidays may be for you.

There are those who say that it is becoming almost impossible to find sunshine holidays in Europe without having to put up with crowds and the disagreeable side of mass tourism. However, Son Bou holidays on the island of Menorca may prove the cynics wrong.

Firstly, Menorca has always tried to avoid the overdevelopment and mass tourism approach that characterises many other areas of the European Mediterranean. Secondly, nowhere has it been more successful than in Son Bou. In Son Bou, holidays are all about relaxation and experiencing the natural landscape rather than moving from one nightclub to another.

There is, of course, the attraction of the sea and beach. The beach at Son Bou is over two kilometres long and is generally regarded as safe for bathing, though tides may arise anywhere and it is always a good idea to closely follow local advice and safety indications. Beautiful as the beach is, it is perhaps behind the beach that Son Bou’s attractions become even more apparent. Apart from two larger hotels at the very far end of the beach, there are no large buildings, vast accommodation complexes or massed rows of high-rises. The initial impression is, without doubt, one that is closer to a large village than a Mediterranean holiday resort.

The environment close to the beach has been beautifully protected. In fact, it is only possible to access the beach through a number of approved entry places – something designed to protect the unique flora and fauna that exist in the wild areas immediately behind parts of the beach.
On the beach itself you’ll find some traditional water sports and a few very low-key and laid-back beach bars and small restaurants.

Son Bou holidays will appeal typically to visitors that are a little more sober in their interests and families with younger children. It is not really a destination likely to appeal to younger people who are determined to ‘let their hair down’ and burn the midnight oil.

There is a good range of shops selling a variety of goods; from those self-catering necessities right up to global brand luxuries, though the resort does not try and sell itself as a huge shopping centre.

In terms of things to do, water sports, walking in the surrounding hills, and nature watching are all high on the agenda. There are also some great caves in the hills and along the coast, which make marvellous targets for exploration. Interestingly, some of them are inhabited!

The charming and historically interesting island capital of Mahon is only about a 30-45 minute drive away. It is well worth a visit to see its ancient streets, tiny shops and its harbour. There are also numerous other sites of interest in surrounding villages and towns, though to start exploring further afield, a hire car will probably be a necessity.

If you are looking for a riotous holiday destination then Son Bou may not be the right place for you. By contrast, if you’re looking to discover the real Menorca and in the context of a quiet, relaxing and more discerning resort, then Son Bou holidays may be ideal.

Son Bou holidays are ideal for the whole family. There is plenty to do to keep everyone busy -you’ll never get bored. However, one of the biggest attractions of he resort is its stunning 1.5-mile-long beach, and if you head here on holiday you’ll certainly want to spend a lot of time there. In fact, there’s a good chance that you will never even have to leave the beach on your holiday. Here are a few reasons why.

Water sports

Water sports can be a highlight of any beach holiday. Luckily, Son Bou holidays come complete with a selection of these. The long stretch of beach comes with a number of different activities that you can take part in, whatever you like to do. There are pedalo boats for those who want to relax above the waves, snorkelling to explore what’s going on underneath the surface and banana boats which the kids will absolutely love. So if you are looking for fun and excitement, you won’t have to venture too far.

Beach Games

Of course, you don’t have to take part in the organised activities to have a great time on the beach in Son Bou. Holidays are all about enjoying the simple things in life, so pack a few games of your own and you will be able to create a whole day of fun without spending a penny.
Even a simple Frisbee can provide the whole family with hours of fun. Or why not take along a kite or a bat and ball and see how long that keeps everyone happy? The kids may love their computer games and TV when they’re at home, but it’s surprising how much fun they can have with the simple things in life when given the opportunity.

Sandcastles

Can there be anything more fun than making a sandcastle? Even if you haven’t made one for years, the sand on Son Bou holidays is ideal for building your own masterpiece. Get the whole family involved and you’ll soon find that you’ve spent half a day building up a mighty palace – only for the tide to come and wash it all away at the end of the day. It’s all about innocent fun on the beach, and a sandcastle will take you back years.

Food & Drink

With a couple of bars right next to the beach, you won’t have to walk far to get your food and drink for the day. There’s no need to head back to the resort to pick up any supplies or to pack up and head into town for a meal. Everything you need is right there on the beach so you can stay for as long as you like.

Hit the Beach

Son Bou holidays are perfect for anyone who is looking for something simple, enjoyable and a lot of fun on their holiday. Make the beach your first stop when you arrive at this beautiful location, and you may well find that you never want to leave.

Son Bou holidays – the very words bring to mind images of beautiful Menorcan beaches, turquoise sea, delicious food and a relaxing break for the whole family. But there’s one factor that will play a large role in just how idyllic your holiday turns out to be: your villa. Whether you travel to Son Bou as a retired couple looking for some peace and quiet, on your honeymoon or as a family, you will want to ensure that you choose the best villa possible without paying over the odds. Here are a few tips to make sure you find the ideal villa for your holiday for the best value possible.

Look Online

The world of travel is changing, and that means when you start planning your Son Bou holidays you might not get the best deal any more by heading down to the local travel agent. Instead, why not look online when it comes to booking your villa? There is likely to be a far wider choice of villas, and you can explore them all at the click of a button. You may even get to see photos of the inside and outside of different villas to help you decide which is the right one for you. And of course, when you book Son Bou holidays online there is a good chance that you will be able to find the best-value villas around. Online deals are often more competitive than the ones you will find at the travel agent, so get searching online and see what you can find.

Travel Out Of Season

Son Bou holidays are very popular during the summer, which is when it gets really busy with tourists. However, peak season is also the most expensive time to travel. If you want to enjoy the same excellent quality villas for less, one option to consider is travelling during the off season. The weather might not be as great, but Son Bou is an ideal holiday destination from April to October. You’ll also get more of the facilities to yourself when you head here in the off season, which might suit you down to the ground, so it’s certainly worth considering.

Get in There Early

The early bird catches the worm, and the same is true for Son Bou holidays. The earlier you start planning your holiday to Menorca, the more likely you will be to find a better-value villa without having to compromise on quality and comfort. If you start looking early then you may be able to find some excellent special offers which allow you to stay in the perfect villa without paying a fortune. So start planning early and keep your eyes open.

Find the Perfect Villa

Villas are an ideal way to experience Son Bou holidays. Comfortable, stylish and situated in some perfect locations, if you can find the right villa for your holiday then you will have a fantastic time. So use the tips above to find your ideal villa for less and enjoy a great holiday in Son Bou!

Brenda Jaaback is the Managing Director of Bartle Holidays. They can provide you with a wide selection of villas for your Son Bou holidays . Check back for more travel writing soon; we’re uploading more original travel articles all the time!

The views from the many resorts of Menorca, Son Bou or San Jaime for example, are quite simply breathtaking. And what better way to enjoy them in the sunshine than with a picnic. So head to the market, pick up some delectable local fare and a bottle of wine or two, and settle in at one of the best picnic spots in Menorca’s Son Bou.

At the Beach
Renowned for being the longest beach in Menorca, Son Bou’s beach is quite possibly one of the places you will spend the most time at during your holiday. The golden sands and beautiful views of the sea make it one of the most relaxing places you can imagine, and certainly a prime spot for kicking off your sandals, letting your hair down and enjoying a good picnic. And if you find yourself too full to finish off all of those sandwiches, you’ll find plenty of ducks in the wetlands just beyond the beach, that would be more than happy to finish off any leftovers that you can’t quite manage.

In the Countryside
One of the best things about Menorca – Son Bou included – is the countryside. With pine forests and rolling hills spreading as far as the eye can see, it’s easy to take yourself away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and make yourself relax by landing yourself in the middle of nowhere. The best way to get to a secluded picnic spot is to take the start of the Cami de Cavalls medieval coastal path between Son Bou and Cala Galdana. This path was once used by riders riding at breakneck speed to warn towns of invasions threatening the coast of Menorca. However, today you can take a much more leisurely pace along it. Walking along the coastal path you’ll enjoy sensational views of both the ocean and the countryside, complemented in the springtime by the plentiful flowers that are in bloom along the way. Stop anywhere along the path, spread out that picnic blanket and give your legs a bit of a rest, but be sure to take plenty of food with you as you might just need the energy for the walk back.

In a Neighbouring Town
Once you’re in Menorca, Son Bou is not the only place worth a visit; why not venture a little further afield into one of the neighbouring towns? Traditional town, Alaior is only a short bus ride or an even shorter drive from Son Bou, and it is an ideal destination for a day trip. The local market provides you with some wonderful options for picnic fare if you did not stock up before you started out. In particular, cheese is the local delicacy, and the town offers an enormous range, some of which have been cured for over two years. If you are visiting Son Bou in the summer, you might just be lucky enough to time your visit with the Fiesta de Sant Llorenc, a music festival which takes place annually in the courtyard of the old convent. It will certainly add some excitement to your afternoon as you picnic whilst watching the locals wheeling around on horseback.

If a picnic is on the cards while you’re on holiday in Menorca, Son Bou is the perfect spot.

Food is undeniably one of the most enjoyable and enviable aspects of a holiday in Menorca, Son Bou being no exception to this rule. But feeding your appetite doesn’t mean you have to go out to a restaurant every night of the week; self-catering in Son Bou can be just as much fun as going out for dinner, and much more rewarding.

Extend Your Repertoire
We all know how to cook to some degree – whether it’s baked beans on toast, macaroni cheese, a roast dinner or a gourmet feast. However, whenever we go on holiday to resorts in places like Menorca – Son Bou or Tore Soli Nou for example – we leave restaurants commenting on how much we’d like to take the recipe for what we’ve just eaten back home with us. Self-catering gives you the perfect opportunity to extend your culinary repertoire whilst you are away. There are many ways to get your hands on local recipes, and then the kitchen in your villa is your oyster! Whether you try your hand at making basic paella dishes, extend your efforts slightly further to dishes using delicacies like lobster, or have a go at a pastry or a macaroon for dessert, you will have a great deal of fun trying out the recipes, and you will find the experience of eating your meal all the more rewarding.

Explore the Local Markets
Markets are a large part of local life in Menorca, Son Bou’s surrounds boasting some of the best. With both food and farmer’s markets a regular occurrence in locations not too far away, such as Mahon and Ciudadela, as well as some more local ones to be found you will have many options when it comes to buying fresh produce. Fresh fruit and vegetables are one of the most appealing options; many of them looking as if they have only very recently been dug out of the ground and making the perfect accompaniment to whatever dish you decide to cook. However, for those of you who are not so concerned about getting your five-a-day, the sausage and cheese stalls might be of slightly more interest. Staying in self-catered accommodation will mean that you have to go shopping, giving you a chance to explore these wonderful markets, and hand-pick your dinner for yourself. After all, dinner always tastes that little bit better when you know where it’s come from.

Eat In Your Own Time
We all like to go out to a restaurant, be waited on hand and foot, and not have to do any clearing up afterwards. However, these pleasant experiences can be ever so slightly spoiled by a feeling that you are being rushed and that you cannot take your time without being a hindrance. In self-catered accommodation, not only can you make your dinner as and when you feel hungry, rather than when you feel it is a reasonable hour to go out, but you can eat, drink and converse entirely at your leisure. With nobody to hurry you along, nobody waiting for your table, and nobody wanting to shut up shop, you can take as much time as you like over your meal, and stay put for hours afterwards. For a relaxing meal at your own pace in Menorca, Son Bou’s self-catered accommodation is the perfect solution.

So, if food is one of the main reasons for visiting Menorca, Son Bou will certainly not disappoint. But why not make it a little more interesting – opt for self-catering and enjoy your meals in an entirely different way.

There are many culinary delights on offer for anyone heading to Menorca. Son Bou is an ideal location to get to grips with Menorcan cuisine, and when you head here you will be spoilt for choice with all the food on offer.

Menorcan food comprises a whole host of fresh ingredients and styles that create something truly original and delicious. Seafood and fresh vegetables make up the staple diet, and Spanish, Catalan, French and even English styles are all included in the mix.

Indeed, apart from the sun, the sea and the attractions, this is one of the main pleasures for anyone heading to Menorca. Son Bou holidays provide you with all this and more, so here are some suggestions for meals that you should definitely try in the restaurants of Son Bou.

Sea Food
If you are a fan of seafood then it won’t be long before you sink your teeth into a delicious ‘caldereta de llagosta’ during your holiday in Menorca. Son Bou is a great place to try this tasty lobster stew, which is one of the main specialities of the island.

For other fish dishes you won’t be able to go far without coming across a paella, with ‘fideua’, consisting of seafood and noodles, being one of the favourite types. Another traditional fish dish is ’serviola a la mallorquina’, consisting of baked fish with tomato sauce. There are also lots of other dishes containing shellfish, sole, squid, sardines, prawns, monkfish and many more to try.

Cheese
Another favourite ingredient in Menorca is cheese. Cheese has been produced on the island for centuries, and has even won a number of awards. The round Mahon cheese is found in many places in Menorca, Son Bou included, and is one of the most popular types.

Tapas
The strong Spanish influence in Menorca means that you can expect to find a number of gastronomic delights on the island that are also found in Spain. For this reason tapas is found all over Menorca. Son Bou bars and restaurants have lots of options when it comes to finding good tapas, and you will be able to eat small snacks consisting of seafood, mushrooms, tripe, meatballs, olives, cheese and much more.

Meat
Meat-heavy sausages, delicious stuffed aubergines from the island’s Moorish heritage and roast lamb are all popular main dishes that will get your mouth watering on your trip to Menorca, Son Bou is the ideal place to try all of them.

Deserts
When it comes to deserts, those with a sweet tooth will find many delicious things on offer in Menorca. Son Bou provides a whole host of pastries, with ‘ensaimada’ perhaps the most well known, as well as numerous different-flavoured ice-creams.

Gin
After you’ve eaten your fill, you’re going to need something to wash it all down with, which is where Gin Xoriguer comes in. Menorca has a long history of gin production, and Xoriguer is the last gin distillery that remains on the island. Different from English gin, it has a unique taste and you’ll probably find yourself drinking a few of these as you relax in a quiet restaurant overlooking the sea.

If it’s your first holiday to Menorca, Son Bou, the popular tourist resort will provide you with a range of home comforts away from home. But with all the excitement of planning a summer holiday many people forget to do the most obvious of tasks. So run through this list before you go and check there’s nothing that you’ve forgotten.

Vaccinations

Before you head off to Menorca, check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website to make sure that you’re up to date with all the vaccinations you need for your holiday. The list of required vaccinations can change at short notice and as most injections need to be taken at least two months before the date of travel.

Apply For an EHIC Card (Formerly the E111 Card)

If you fall ill whilst in Menorca, Son Bou has a well-stocked pharmacy but if your ailments are slightly more serious and you find yourself needing to seek hospital treatment, an EHIC card will come in handy. The Balearics have a reciprocal health agreement with the United Kingdom and hospitals will provide free or reduced-cost necessary treatment on production of an EHIC card obtained in your country of origin.

Travel Insurance

Before you jet off to Menorca check that you have an up-to-date travel insurance policy for every member of your family. Even your children will need to be covered, either on your policy or through a separate child policy. Missed baggage, flight delays and hospitalisation are all covered by travel insurance and forgetting to take out insurance prior to your holiday could leave you with a hefty bill in an emergency situation.

Turn your clocks forward

With only an hour’s difference between the UK and Menorca, Son Bou won’t leave you jetlagged. However, to avoid missing your excursion pick-ups and get your children into a holiday routine you’ll need to put your wristwatch forward one hour on landing.

Change Your Pounds to Euro

Like most of Europe, Menorca’s currency is the Euro so make sure you convert your Great British Pounds before you arrive on the island. Menorca’s Son Bou has plenty of amazing bars and restaurants and the last thing you want is not to have the Euros to spend in them!

Can I Use My Credit Cards?

You’ll need to phone your bank or Credit Card company and inform them that you’re going away so they don’t block your card for unusual spending. However, once you reach Menorca, Son Bou widely accepts American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa cards. ATMs or hole-in-the-wall cash machines are also widely available at the resort.

Travellers Cheques

If you’d rather bring traveller’s cheques to Menorca, Son Bou has plenty of places that will willingly change these for you. Hotels, airports, travel agencies and banks will all change traveller’s cheques. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller’s cheques in Euros or Pound Sterling.

Don’t Forget the Sun-Screen

If you’re travelling to Son Bou, it’s likely that you’ll want to make the most out of Menorca’s longest beach and if you plan on spending lazy days on holiday just watching your children build sandcastles, you’ll need to make sure that the whole family is covered up. This means sun-hats, sunglasses and a slathering of sunscreen for everyone. You’ll need a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or above and one that’s slightly higher for the children.

If you have an image of holidays in the Balearic Islands that consists of packed resorts and forests of high-rises, then think again! For holidays in Menorca, Son Bou caters for the holidaymaker that is looking for a little more tranquillity and natural quiet charm.

Menorca – the calm island

The Balearic Islands sit off the Spanish coast nestling in the beautiful Mediterranean. Menorca is one of the smaller islands of the group and has worked hard over the years to retain its small island charm and culture. Many people argue that it has successfully managed to fend off the temptations of over-development that have blighted some Mediterranean destinations.

Over the centuries many peoples, including the Romans, Moors and British, have ruled it – each leaving their own particular legacy. The capital city of Mahon (it was actually the British who made it the capital in the 18th century) is a charming town based around the second deepest harbour in the world. It’s full of ancient appeal, historic buildings, shops and boutiques and is well worth a look.

Best of Menorca -Son Bou

This is a resort based around one of the longest and best beaches on the island. It is oriented towards the slightly more discerning visitor and as such, it’s often regarded as being ideal for families and those looking for a quieter and rather more relaxing holiday. It comprises not only hotels and villas that provide the accommodation around the beach, but also a range of other attractions and facilities.

The Beach

With fine golden sand, the beach stretches for between 2 and 3 kilometres. It is separated from the resort and for the most part protected by sand dunes and reed beds meaning that you feel that you’re in a secluded area. These reed beds and dunes are a haven for wildlife – particularly migrating birds. Those areas can be explored if you’re interested in wildlife and bird spotting.

What makes the beach doubly appealing is that bathing is generally regarded as safe for all. Even so, the water is open and as with most beaches, caution is always advisable – particularly where children are concerned. It is important to pay attention to any Red/Amber/Green flags and any ‘on-the-day’ local advice. The beach is served by a number of unobtrusive bars and restaurants, so you won’t be too far from refreshment if you need it after a period of sunbathing and swimming!

The town

A relatively small and discrete resort on Menorca, Son Bou is unlikely to make you feel that you’re in a large town. Part of the resort is based around hotel and apartment style accommodation that typically caters for families and more mature holidaymakers. A little further back from the beach there are some developments of luxury villas used by some for their holidays or by permanent residents.

The culture is generally best described as ‘laid back’ and unrushed. There are a variety of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets and some of the larger hotels also have in-house entertainment for nights out.

Sights and diversions

In and around the general area of Menorca’s Son Bou there are plenty of things to do apart from just soaking up the sun. There is a waterchute where you and your children could pass a happy few hours just doing nothing but frolicking. There is also the Maze where visitors try to find their way around a maze looking for tokens in the process – expect some magical visitors and interruptions while you’re trying to do so!

There are a variety of shops in the resort selling a wide range of clothes and goods. A little further away (about 5 miles) is the town of Alaior with a local market on Thursday mornings. It’s also worth making the relatively short trip to the capital Mahon for a look-around and also the original capital Ciudadela which has a very unique old-world charm. Monte Toro is also worth a trip. It is the highest point on the island (though it’s only around 1200 feet) but the church on the top and the spectacular views are not to be missed.

If you’re looking for a little more relaxation and sophistication and a little less hectic holidaying during your stay in Menorca, Son Bou could be ideal.

Hands up who loves mayonnaise? Whether it’s a dollop on some fries or mixed with tuna in a crusty baguette, mayonnaise is pretty fantastic stuff. But if you thought that the sauce came from France, then think again.

Menorca, Son Bou’s homeland is the island where mayonnaise was invented and any Spaniard will strongly attest this claim. The sauce is known throughout its homeland as salsa mahonesa and named after the island’s capital, Mahon. The French allegedly absconded with the recipe when the seized the port of Mahon in 1756.

The French may claim that they’ve been making the sauce since 1459, but we recommend that you try the real deal whilst in Menorca. Son Bou has plenty of local restaurants offering the local delicacy snails and mayonnaise. But if you thought the escargot were another Gallic touch, then again you’d be wrong – this elite food was first served in ancient Rome.

Son Bou is a thriving holiday destination on the relaxing Balearic Island of Menorca. Son Bou holidays focus upon Menorca’s longest beach which runs between the attractions and accommodation. Find out where to step off the sand and what there is to see when you do.

Find Your Feet and Your Food

It should be easy to find your way around on your Son Bou holidays. Son Bou lies at the centre of Menorca’s south coast, about half an hour from the Mahon airport. The commercial heart (urbanitzacio) of Son Bou is in the east end of the resort. Here you will find the principal beachside hotels, the supermarket, chemist, car hire, a host of shops and a medical centre.

It’s also home to a wide selection of places to eat that will satisfy most tastes and budgets. Several bars and restaurants embrace British styles of fare, as well as further international cuisines such as Chinese and Indian. But it is not difficult to sample more traditional Spanish dishes on your holiday; Son Bou has restaurants that will offer the ever-popular Paella, and Menorcan specialities like caldreta (lobster stew) and chiprones (octopus in batter).

Moving west along the beach from Son Bou, villas and family holiday apartments are set in the gentle hillside of San Jaime. The complex at San Jaime has its own version of the essential facilities you find at the commercial centre. Beyond here is Torre Soli Nou, a quieter area of private properties further back from the beach.

Enjoy the Endless Beach

With the largest beach in Menorca, at two and a half miles in length, there’s no shortage of sand and sea on Son Bou holidays. The sand is white and fine, gradually sloping into clear water, with a shallow waterline making it ideal for paddling and good for small children to enjoy. The beach operates a flag system for the safety of all swimmers.

Out in the water you’ll find holiday makers enjoying the fun rides that operate here and a variety of watersports for you to try on your Son Bou holidays. Or perhaps you would rather just look out over the view with a drink from any of the three bars installed along the beach.

Entertainment for Son Bou Holidays

If these bars take your fancy, you may want to try the nightlife of the clubs, Hawaiian Bar, and entertainment at the Club San Jaime, which operates during the holiday season. But the area was built with families in mind, so you’ll find plenty of entertainment for the children as well. Water slides, playgrounds, a maze, tennis courts, bowling alley, merry-go-round, and a fun train have been assembled along the length of the seemingly endless beach.

Culture and Nature

It’s not just fun and frolics on Son Bou holidays though, Menorca’s history is also on show for those that like to absorb some culture as they soak up the sun. There are a number of cliff-top cave houses that are remnants of the island’s earliest inhabitants, and at one end of the beach is a fort that dates back to the Iron Age.

Running parallel to the beach is a protected nature reserve and sand dune environment. There’s an area of wetland reed beds set aside, this serves as a feeding and resting place for many species of migratory sea birds. Aquatic birds like their Son Bou holidays too, you see. Near to this is the hillside area known as San Jaime where you’ll find the Son Bou Villas and apartments.

But no-one will blame you if you choose take it easy. With so much beach to enjoy, perhaps the only walk you’ll want will be from your villa to the sand!

Son Bou villas make the ideal choice of accommodation during your time in Menorca. Son Bou is a fantastic location which offers the visitor many things to see and do. But if you want to see more of Menorca, then there is one excellent way to get around that is cheap and enjoyable: walking.

Menorca seems to have been designed for walkers. What better way to see Son Bou and the surrounding area than on foot? Luckily, Menorca is well equipped for walkers as there are lots of easy trails to follow. So next time you are on a family holiday or a peaceful break staying in one of the delightful Son Bou villas, make sure you try it out.

Walking – The Cheap and Convenient Option

There is nothing easier than packing a picnic lunch for the day and heading off on a walking expedition when you stay in one of the Son Bou villas in Menorca. It won’t cost a thing, and you have the freedom to go where you like. The only limiting factor is how much energy you have, but a few days of walking will soon get you into good shape.

Son Bou villas are situated in the perfect location and there are plenty of walking trails to explore right outside your doorstep. They will take you along the beach and coastline or inland where you can enjoy the spectacular landscape in a way that many people never get to do. The best thing is you can enjoy it all without being stuck inside a car.

Where to Walk in Menorca?

There are few limits to where you can walk in Menorca when you stay in one of the many Son Bou villas on offer. You could choose to stick to the beach along the stunning coastline, or head inland to explore the countryside. When you are staying in Son Bou you will soon realise that other towns such as Mercadel and Alayor are within easy reach, so you could head to these places as well by car or bus and explore the surrounding areas on foot.

Things to Remember when Walking in Menorca

The most important thing to take into account when walking in Menorca is to use a good sunscreen! It can be all too easy to be admiring the beautiful views and forget that that lovely warm sun beating down on your shoulders can actually be strong. Before you leave your Son Bou Villas, slather it on and take some extra with you. Also don’t forget to pack a good supply of water in your picnic bag along with your lunch.

Get Out and See the Island

When you next head to Son Bou, villas provide the ideal accommodation. But although you might be tempted to stay near to your villa and not stray further than the beach, there is a whole island waiting for you if you decide to go out walking for the day. Try it out and see what you can discover!

Son Bou villas are a great place to stay in Menorca, but there are other resorts to consider as well. Compare Son Bou to the other major resorts on the island.

Son Bou is one of the chief attractions of a holiday in Menorca. With arguably the best beach on the island, stunning surrounding countryside, and a wealth of restaurants, bars, and holiday facilities, it is no surprise that the resort is such a popular place to go. The hotels and Son Bou villas are top notch, providing quality accommodation for all budgets. Overall, it is a truly great choice for a holiday in the sun.

But there are plenty of other resorts on the island that you might consider instead, each one with its own individual attractions and unique selling points. How does Son Bou shape up against its rivals?

Cala Galdana

For sheer beauty, Cala Galdana might have the edge on Son Bou. Photographs of this horseshoe shaped bay adorn almost every brochure and guidebook on Menorca, and the resort is regarded as the most visually stunning on the island. The resort is extremely popular and well equipped, but the steep cliffs can present access difficulties to those with mobility problems – an issue that most Son Bou villas won’t have. If you simply must stay in the most beautiful place on the island, Cala Galdana might be the place for you, but Son Bou’s enormous beach and more convenient location make it a strong rival.

Santo Tomas

Located close to Son Bou, this resort has an entirely different feel. One of the quietest and most laid back resorts on the island, Santo Tomas is perfect for those looking for peace and seclusion on their holiday to Menorca. The resort also offers some good local routes for hikers. Of course, its beach can’t compete with the beach at Son Bou, and for many Santo Tomas may be just a little too quiet.

Binibeca

With a delightful fishing village nearby, a stay at Binibeca offers the chance to see some traditional Menorcan architecture up close. If you like charming villages more than spectacular beaches, then Binibeca might be a good choice for you. If you find yourself craving a big open expanse of beach, you’d be better off booking a stay at one of the Son Bou villas!

Punta Prima

This resort, located close to Binibeca, offers a little something to everyone. A good beach, plenty of local attractions, good facilities, and the regular spectacle of yachts passing through on their way to Mahon. It is a fine all round destination, though the beach at Son Bou is clearly superior. True beach lovers may find themselves better served by Son Bou, but if your interests lie elsewhere, Punta Prima can be a fine choice as well, with many excellent accommodation options available at the resort.

As can be seen, there is a truly great selection of resorts in Menorca, and everyone will have their own personal favourite, depending on what they want from their holiday. But with the best beach and a superb selection of Son Bou villas, it seems likely that Son Bou will still remain one of the most popular choices in Menorca for years to come!

Son Bou villas are great places to stay for a holiday in Menorca. This article takes a look at some experiences you can seek out on your Son Bou holidays, such as the regional food and the local attractions away from the shore.

Most Son Bou villas are located in two hillside zones called San Jamie and Torre Soli Nou, the latter being the quieter of the two. Both are pretty areas of pine woodland with picturesque views of the sea and the Menorcan countryside. Within a few miles is the hilltop site of Torre d’en Galmés where you can find the remains of an ancient Menorcan settlement.

Megaliths

Torre d’en Galmés is a good place to learn about Menorca’s past, and you can walk under the stone archways that once were home to prehistoric man. It is located within a few miles of the Son Bou villas and you can reach it by taking the road that runs between Son Bou and the inland town of Alaior. The stone structures at Torre d’en Galmés are called talaiots, and they date back to the Bronze Age. The ruins are high on a hill that provides a wonderful view of the island, and these are just one example of the many ancient stone edifices scattered throughout Menorca.

Local Food

If you have a taste for seafood then you should make sure you sample some Menorcan specialties during your Son Bou holiday. You can try some of the traditional seafood dishes at the restaurants in Son Bou, as well as the popular Paella, there’s a rich lobster dish called caldreta, and battered octopus called chiprones. Of course, you may not want to eat in a restaurant every night. If you choose, you and your family can enjoy a meal al fresco on the terrace of your Son Bou villa, cooking dinner on the barbecue.

Flocking to Son Bou

Although it is a less fashionable activity for a Son Bou holiday, bird watching is quite good here because of the local nature reserve, and enthusiasts will visit the reserve to see rare birds. Even people who don’t appreciate ornithology will be impressed by the thousands of sparrows and swifts that will sometimes fill the sky above Son Bou.

You can see the best wildlife at the western end of the Son Bou nature reserve which is further away from the hotels at the east end of the beach, and closer to the quieter areas where the Son Bou villas are. Species that visit Menorca include the Tawny Pipit, Shearwater, Great-white Egret, Bee-eater, Marsh Harrier and Nightingale, as well as more impressive birds like the Booted Eagle and Egyptian Vulture.

August is a good time for a bird-watching Son Bou holiday because it is during migration season, so there will be plenty to see in the sky.

Beach

Of course, most people flock to Son Bou for a different reason. Access to Menorca’s longest beach is the main allure of Son Bou holidays. On a coastline with white sand and a sea that can appear bright blue because of the clear water, it’s a great place to play in the waves, or just to look out on as you sunbathe.

Son Bou holidays are about more than just sun, sea and perfect surf. The area is also rich in flora and fauna, with many visitors flocking to the area to check-out the birdlife. Here are just a few of the species that you may encounter whilst on your Son Bou holidays.

The Egyptian Vulture

In the eastern part of Son Bou lie some rugged limestone cliffs, through which a small freshwater stream flows. This area is particularly popular with the Egyptian Vulture, an endangered species that is also known as the Scavenger Vulture, and recognisable by its white plumage and distinct diamond-shaped tail. Due to the bird’s habit of hanging around dirty carcasses, its plumage often appears to be brown in colour; however this is not the case. The bird can often be found nesting in the rugged cliffs and is best spotted during the summer months of July and August.

The Mediterranean Shag

One of the most popular species of bird that you will encounter on your Son Bou holidays is the Mediterranean Shag, a black-plumed bird that is best spotted off the rocks at Son Bou’s famous beach. Although this bird is shy at the same time it is a common sight whatever the season. However the growth in Mediterranean tourism, and the increase in the length of the tourism season, has seen the species decline during the past century. The Mediterranean shag nests primarily in the winter and lays its eggs from November through to March.

Blue Rock Thrushes

If you want to spot sea birds whilst on your Son Bou holidays then the rugged limestone cliffs, where Menorca’s largest hotel sticks out to sea, is the place to head to with your binoculars in hand. Migrant hirundines and swifts can often be found circling the thermals above this area, but the most common sight is the blue rock thrush. These small blue birds nest in the limestone cliffs and often lay a cluster of between three to five eggs a time. The blue rock thrush is the national bird of Malta, and has a clear melodious call that is similar to the call of the standard rock thrush.

Raven

One of the birds that you may have trouble spotting on a Son Bou holiday is the common raven. These large foreboding birds are in stark decline throughout Menorca and, as they are one of the few species that do not migrate, Menorcans are worried that they will disappear from the island altogether. It is believed that there are many factors that have resulted in the disappearance of Menorca’s raven population. These factors range from the decline of cows on the island to the increase in the island’s crow population.

Little Egret

Most of the egrets in Menorca can be found at La Albufera; however, Son Bou is the second best place on the island to spot one of these elusive seabirds. The little egret is the smallest species of heron and can be distinguished from the others through its all white plumage, however, it shouldn’t be confused with the snowy egret which is the modern equivalent of this old world species. On your Son Bou holidays you are most likely to spot little egrets in the marsh land located to the east of the main holiday resort. This marsh land consists of reed beds which are fronted by dunes and coastal scrub. As most tourists stay close to their hotels and the facilities of the main resort, this part of Son Bou is rarely disturbed and therefore is a haven for birdlife, particularly wading birds who make their homes in this area.

Whatever birdlife you manage to spot on your Son Bou holiday, you’re guaranteed to have a great time. So pack your binoculars and get spotting, as there are many more species left to discover on a holiday in Menorca.

Here you will find the principal beachside hotels, the supermarket, chemist, medical centre, car hire, and a host of shops including designer stores.

With the largest beach in Menorca, at two and a half kilometres in length, there’s no shortage of sand and sea on Son Bou holidays.

If these bars take your fancy, you may want to try the nightlife of the clubs, quizzes and karaoke that operate during the holiday season.

A holiday in a Son Bou villa offers a different and private experience of the Balearic Islands. Unlike accommodation offered in commercial hotels, you have total privacy and seclusion while still being able to enjoy all that the island has to offer. Experience the Mediterranean islands without even leaving your villa, and enjoy the scenery away from the crowds.

Private, Peaceful and Relaxing

While the bustle and personal service provided by commercial hotels may appeal to some, there is no denying that a bit of privacy on a Mediterranean island is a tempting thought. A villa in Son Bou – what could be more relaxing? Son Bou, a small island set in the Balearics, is the perfect place to do nothing at all.

The largest beach in Menorca can be found in Son Bou, with sparkling waters and golden sands. While a trip down to the beach would certainly be enjoyable, a view of the beach from your private Son Bou Villas pool could be even better. You can avoid the crowds, throw self-consciousness to the wind, and still have your island beach and Son Bou holiday experience from your pool with a view.

A Villa with a View

At the top of your list when picking your Son Bou villa home should be a view of the ocean. Provided you have a magnificent view, you’re already on holiday in an island paradise without even leaving your home. Whether you’re lying in bed gazing out to sea, lounging in the pool while watching the ocean, or simply sitting on your terrace enjoying the sunset, there’s no denying that you’re in holiday heaven without setting foot out of your door.

Set behind the beach is a wetland area, where open waters bordered by reeds offer a contrasting view to the sandy beach. If you pick the right villa, you could experience views of the beach and the wetland without getting off your pool lounger.

An Evening In

Staying in a villa in Son Bou allows for complete freedom when it comes to culinary decisions. If commercial restaurants tickle your fancy, you’re not losing out as a host of restaurants to choose from await you. But if you prefer to dine in your bathing suit, a barbecue on your terrace might just do the trick. Local fresh seafood and a glass of wine as the sun sets beats being waited on in a commercial restaurant any day.

Venturing Out

On days when you feel like venturing out of your villa, Son Bou is waiting to be explored. With a giant maze to get lost in, the ancient graveyard of Basilica de Son Bou to discover, and the resort shops to browse through, you won’t be lacking in activities. Or if it’s an action-packed day you’re after, the ocean awaits you with whichever water sport you choose.

But after a day outdoors, the tranquillity and privacy of your villa will be a welcome relief. There’s nothing better than enjoying all the scenery the region has to offer in the total seclusion your Son Bou villa provides.

A Family Home Away from Home

A Son Bou villa holiday would be ideal for a family trip away. You have your own personal villa to turn into your holiday home, where you have nothing but your view, your family and yourself to worry about.

Son Bou is one of the main tourist spots in Menorca, with tourists flocking every year. With the longest beach on the island, and a hot-spot for entertainment and activities, it’s no wonder Son Bou villas are a popular choice.

Son Bou is situated in the Alaior region of Menorca, an island in the Balearics. This beautiful area hosts thousands of tourists each year, and holidaymakers flock to the region for a summer Son Bou holiday. There are many properties to choose from, where you can enjoy the island from the peace and quiet of your villa, or join the tourists on the beautiful beach perfecting your tan and enjoying the sunshine.

Why Choose Son Bou?

There are several reasons why Son Bou holidays are such a popular choice among tourists. For a start, the beach is superb. The longest beach on the island, it is 2.5km long and over 100m wide. Whatever sort of beachside day you’re after, the beach is long enough to provide a wide variety of choice. If you want the busy summer atmosphere, life guards and shops nearby, there is the buzzing tourist section of the beach. But if you want a little bit of peace and quiet, there are more deserted spots about a 10 minute walk from the beach entrance. Naturists enjoy these quieter areas of the beach, but if you just want a bit of tranquillity, these spots could suit you well on your Son Bou holiday.

The popular area of the beach has all ingredients for a relaxing day of sun and sea. Sun beds, umbrellas and beach activities are all available throughout the day, and you can soak up the sun in comfort. The beach has three bars, all providing excellent views and great spots to sip sundowners as the sun sets over the ocean. If you want a quite beachside meal, you can enjoy Spanish local dishes such as Paella served at the bars. All this makes for a good day of sun while on a Son Bou holiday, and at the end of the day your Son Bou villa will only be a short walk away to return to.

Son Bou is split into three districts: Son Bou (the town centre), and the two resorts of San Jaime and Torre Soli Nou.

San Jaime

San Jaime is the larger of the two resorts in Son Bou, and is a busy tourist destination. It is situated close to the beautiful, stretching Son Bou beach, and is set amongst pretty pine trees in a wooded village on a hill. The Son Bou villas here are situated not only close to the sea, but close to the amenities of the San Jaime Complex. Particularly good for families on Son Bou holidays, the San Jaime complex consists of a children’s playground, tennis courts and a maze, which all make for entertaining afternoons for the whole family. There is also a pool and a waterchute. You can take a swim in the pool when you want to rinse off the salt and sand from a day spent on the beach, and children will have endless hours of fun with the waterchute.

You can also take a ride on the ‘fun train,’ a trip which will take you to the top of the resort, and then chug along back down the beach, affording great views of the coast and the beautiful surrounding inland areas. This is a great activity when you want to stay close to your Son Bou villa, and makes for an afternoon of fun.

Torre Soli Nou

While you can still enjoy all the activities that the San Jaime complex has on offer, if you are in search of a quieter Son Bou holiday, Torre Soli Nou is the right resort for you. This newer resort has luxury Son Bou villas situated in a wooded area (in a similar style to San Jaime), where you can expect to enjoy beautiful views of the sea and coast from your deck.

Situated further away from the beach, this resort offers a quieter retreat when you’re on a Son Bou holiday. You can enjoy the peace and quiet, the fresh ocean air, and the privacy of your Son Bou Villa. And when you want a bit of excitement and entertainment, San Jaime is only a short walk away.

Son Bou may be small but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t perfectly formed as far as the nightlife is concerned. Son Bou holidays offer the best nightlife in Menorca with something to suit every member of the family.

Once you have left your Son Bou villa ensure that you start the evening the best possible way; with cocktails! Bou Hai is the ideal place on a Son Bou holiday to have a few drinks and with a number of specially adapted virgin concoctions you can even bring the children along; who are bound to love the cute roller skating waitresses. With a name like Bou Hai, you won’t be surprised to hear that the bar specialises in Hawaiian tiki concoctions and whilst the Pina Coladas are very good, it is the fresh fruit daiquiris which are the bars speciality.

One venue that you won’t be able to take the children too is the Discoteca Son Bou. So arrange a childminder in advance so that you can spend an evening on your Son Bou holiday dancing along to a mixture of cheese and club classics. The nightclub regularly flies in DJs from the United Kingdom and is also known for its legendary foam parties which take place during the seasonal months.

Because of the small size of the resort all of the major bars and restaurants are located within a ten minute walk of the main villas in Son Bou, which means that it is very easy to find your way around on a night out. Son Bou’s smaller bars are well known for their warm and friendly atmosphere and British holidaymakers often flock to the Kit Cat Bar, an English-run bar which serves warm cheese and ham toasties. The Kit Cat Bar is also known for the quiz and karaoke evenings that it runs during the week, where you can compete against other Son Bou holidaymakers in order to win cash prizes.

There are three bars which are open until the early hours and these are Mojitos, Copacabana and Casablanca, all of which stay open until 4am. However, if you’ve brought the children along and are looking for evening entertainment that is a bit more family-orientated then head to the bowling alley which features a ten pin bowling arcade alongside pool tables and arcade machines. This is bound to be a hit with all family members whilst on your Son Bou holiday.

One of the best ways to spend a relaxing evening on a Son Bou holiday is by sampling the local cuisine. If your children are fussy eaters then you’ll pleased to note that there are a number of restaurants serving English food in the area, and The Coach and Horses in nearby Saint Climent is among the best. However, more adventurous eaters should take the opportunity to sample some traditional Menorcan food at the Casa Andreas which provides a selection of traditional tapas and seafood dishes. However, the best thing about Casa Andreas is that it’s located opposite the Bou Hai Bar and those fruit daiquiris can also help provide the perfect ending to your Son Bou holiday.

Son Bou villas are great places to stay for a holiday in Menorca. This article takes a look at some experiences you can seek out on your Son Bou holidays, such as the regional food and the local attractions away from the shore.

Most Son Bou villas are located in two hillside zones called San Jamie and Torre Soli Nou, the latter being the quieter and the further inland.

A typical day on a Son Bou Holiday

Staying in Son Bou villas whilst on a Menorca holiday will allow for a relaxing, tranquil and revitalising experience. With the glorious Mediterranean sun, sea and cuisine, you can’t go too far wrong if you plan a Son Bou Holiday. Here is a description of a typical day when staying in Son Bou.

Wake Up in your Villa

As dawn breaks, you can wake up in comfort and style in your Son Bou villa. You can rise at leisure, where magnificent views of the resort await you. Sit on your terrace and gaze out over the ocean and beachside wetland area while you enjoy your morning coffee. And if you need a refreshing wake up, take a dip in your pool, all the while enjoying the fresh ocean air.

Stroll Down to the Beach

Son Bou proudly boasts the longest beach in Menorca, and how better to begin any day than with a stroll along the shore whilst on a Son Bou holiday? You can wander along the water’s edge for 2.5km on this superb stretch of beach, and you will reach secluded, quieter spots just 10 minutes walk from the main beach area.

If your Son Bou villa is situated in the resort of San Jaime, the beach will only be a few minutes walk from your front door, and you can be on the beach minutes after waking up.

Daytime Activities

The day is all yours when on a Son Bou holiday, and a range of activities await you. You could spend a quiet couple of hours in the fascinating Basilica de Son Bou graveyard, an ancient and historical site. Or you could wander aimlessly through the giant maze, as the warm sun makes for a pleasant atmosphere.

If you want to explore the history of the island further still, you can visit Toree d’en Galmés, situated not far out of Son Bou’s centre. Dating back to Bronze Age, you can wander beneath ancient stone archways, as you admire the views of the island below, a cultural way to spend your time on a Son Bou holiday.

Seafood for Lunch?

After the morning’s activities you will more than likely be ready for a sumptuous Menorcan seafood lunch. Many of the local restaurants provide excellent local seafood dishes, and you can try the popular local dish, Paella, too. Whether it’s lobster or octopus you’re after, the fresh seafood you will find on your Son Bou holiday is sure to be superb.

Into the Evening

You may wish to take a siesta after your delicious seafood lunch, or simply while away the afternoon on a sun lounger on your villa deck, getting up only to take a dip in the pool. As the evening draws near, the exciting nightlife of Son Bou awaits you. You can begin your evening with cocktails at Bou Hai, as you enjoy the pink sunset whilst sipping a fresh fruit daiquiri, marking the beginning of your evening on a Son Bou holiday.

If a night out dancing tickles your fancy, Discoteca Son Bou is ready and waiting. You can dance the night away at the disco, or head to one of Son Bou’s later night bars, such as Moijito or Casablanca. Whatever you decide, you can enjoy your night in the happy knowledge that your Son Bou villa is only a short walk away, and your relaxing day will start all over again in the morning.

A Son Bou villa holiday is a bit like the Goldilocks, looking for something that is “just right”. It is perfect for the whole family and you can be certain that both children and adults alike will find plenty to do in this seaside destination. Here are just a few ideas on how to spend time on your Son Bou holidays, with a little something for every member of the family.

Mum

Most mums would be perfectly content on their Son Bou holidays just putting their feet up and relaxing with a glass of wine on the balcony of their Son Bou villa.

But whilst spending quality time relaxing and enjoying the lack of household chores is all very well, we’re sure that Mum would also enjoy some time spent alone in the Cova d’en Xoroi. These magical natural caves, located just 15 minutes from Son Bou, are cut deep into the edge of the coastal cliffs and include a network of walkways and terrace bars. The caves have an ethereal feel to them during the evening, they are also the perfect place for Mum to spend a morning on her Son Bou holidays simply relaxing with a mug of coffee and listening to the ambient music whilst gazing out at the incredible views of the pounding Mediterranean below.

Dad

Dads can be history buffs so we’re certain that the town of Torre d’en Gaumes would be a hit with many fathers on their Son Bou holidays. The talayotic village certainly makes a change from the sleek Son Bou villas which can be found on the beachfront. But considering that these caves date back to the prehistoric period it’s really of no surprise that the dwellings don’t quite match up to their modern counterparts. Although prehistoric remains can be found all over Menorca, Torre d’en Gaumes is believed to be the largest settlement and the gathering point for many ancient ceremonies. The site also contains a hill dotted with fallen taulas and capitals which are bound to fascinate Dad on his Son Bou holidays.

Eldest Child

The Maze is the perfect place to spend a day whilst on your Son Bou holidays, but when darkness falls then things really begin to get interesting. During the confines of a wooden maze, customers must collect items and get their cards stamped whilst putting up with a couple of surprises en-route. This may sound easy enough during the day but when night falls customers may find themselves being chased by ghosts, witches and zombies. If all this sounds a little too scary then stick to exploring the maze during the daytime when fairies and magicians provide a more pleasant distraction on your Son Bou holidays.

Youngest Child

The family-friendly golden beach is, for many people, the main reason for choosing a Son Bou Villa. With its warm sea and plethora of family activities it is easily possible to spend a whole day enjoying the longest beach on the island. Son Bou has plenty of activities for water-sports enthusiasts to enjoy, but it is also safe enough for small children to paddle in. There are a number of tourist shops located alongside the seafront selling plastic buckets and spades and everything you need to make your Son Bou holiday extra special.

Goldilocks would love it too.

If you’re looking for the epitome of a beach lover’s paradise then look no further than the Menorcan resort town of Son Bou. Holidays to this part of the world are popular with families and couples alike because of the diverse range of activities, and the absolutely stunning beach – widely regarded as the best on the island. Son Bou villas are situated conveniently close to the beach and amenities, creating a laid-back and inviting atmosphere.

With so much fun to be had both on and off the beach on your Son Bou holiday, it is tempting never to leave the resort! However for a change of pace, it can be a great day out to jump in a car and explore other nearby attractions the island can offer. So take a deep breath, slide into the left-hand driver’s seat and set off on a day trip from Son Bou!

Alaior
Just a very short drive (or bus ride) from Son Bou, Alaior is a traditional Spanish town. With its white-washed buildings and network of narrow windy streets, Menorca’s third largest town has much to offer the day tripper. You should make time to visit the Sala Municipal D’Art Contemporani which depicts much of the Roman history of the island.

There is also a bustling weekly market where you can barter for some of the local crafts to take home as a memento of your Son Bou holidays. Alaior is known as the cheese capital of Menorca so you must sample the famous local cheeses, some of which are cured for up to two years. There is plenty of other local produce at the markets too, and you can stock up for a dinner at home in your Son Bou villa.

Every summer Alaior plays host to a music festival in the courtyard of an old convent, and if you’re lucky enough to be enjoying your Son Bou holidays in August you can experience the fantastic Fiesta de Sant Llorenc, with some incredible horseback high jinks from the locals!

Ciutadella
Nick named Vella I Bella – “Old and beautiful” – Ciutadella is indeed both, and well worth the drive to visit while on your Son Bou holiday. It is rich in local culture and even though tourism has made its mark, the former capital of the island has retained its authentic medieval charm. It is a delightfully lively port town and was an important trading centre in the middle ages. Although the capital was moved to Mahon in the 18th century, Cuitadella has remained the island’s religious centre because the bishop refused to move! The town has an interesting history; at one time during Turkish occupation, the entire population of over 3000 residents was sold into slavery in the markets of Istanbul.

The town has some wonderful examples of Gothic and Baroque inspired architecture, and you can wander up to the old square and visit the cathedral which dates back to 1287.

If you’re feeling lazy after your explorations of the town, you can bask in the sunshine at one of the many harbour side cafes, or stroll around the port admiring the brightly coloured boats. After a lovely day spent enjoying some culture, you can head back down the road to your beautiful Son Bou villa to rest up and get ready to hit the beach again tomorrow!

Son Bou is a desirable resort on the south coast of Menorca, the second largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands. Read some vital statistics about Son Bou holidays to find out how this destination stands out from the others and why it is so popular when it comes to choosing a holiday in Menorca.

Son Bou Climate

With an average of three hundred sunny days per year, Son Bou holidays are great for picking up a healthy looking tan. There is almost no rain at all here during the summer months, and temperatures reach a peak of 30°C – hot climes perfect for sunbathing. You can take pleasure in 11 hours of sunshine and fresh Mediterranean air.

You can expect good weather here throughout the year. Between May and October the temperature should remain above 20°C, and even in winter, the temperature rarely falls below 3ºC in Son Bou. Holidays at this time of year are ideal for people who like the quiet life. They’ll find the cafes at their least busy and the beach empty, perfect for a quiet stroll on the sand.

The Famous Beach at Son Bou

The shoreline at Son Bou is unique to Menorca. Along the rest of the southern coast, the beaches are enclosed in a series of small coves surrounded by rocky walls, but the Son Bou beach is on a completely different scale. It is the longest and biggest in Menorca, at two and a half kilometres in length, and an average of fifty metres wide. This means that, even during high season, the beach’s “occupation level” is just medium, with plenty of space for Son Bou holidaymakers to spread out along its length.

Because the geology of the area consists of chalky calcium-rich rocks, a large proportion of the Son Bou sand is very fine and white in colour. The beach slopes gradually into the clear seawater with the sea bed remaining shallow and sandy for a long way out. This means that with the light on it from the right angle the sea appears turquoise.

Sea temperatures can reach as high as a balmy 25 ºC, making this shoreline perfect for the families that come for Son Bou holidays in the summer. There are established lifeguard stations along the beach and a first aid service. There are also some picnic tables in the area behind the beach so you can keep the sand out of your sandwiches.

There are four large hotels that serve the resort, but the best of the accommodation is found in the pockets of Son Bou villas set in the gentle green hillside. There is a wide selection of villas available to suit all family sizes, most with private pools.

At the east end of the beach you will find a generous choice of restaurants that cater to all tastes, serving British fare, Indian food, Chinese, and a number of traditional Spanish meals. These are located in the heart of Son Bou (urbanitzacio) where you can also stock up at the supermarket and use services like the medical centre, chemist, car hire, and a host of designer outlets: everything you could want for a pleasurable Son Bou holiday.
