Unfortunately, those on their Bermuda holidays in the second half of this year will have just missed the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts, but now is a great time to plan for next year. The first two months of every year see the island play host to its very own performing arts festival.

Bermuda holidays put visitors on the doorstep of this extravagant production, a perfect way to spend the winter months. Artists travel from across the globe to perform at the festival, which also acts as a creative hub for artistic growth and cultural exchange. The schedule brings together a wide range of different performers and styles – there will be something for any taste.

Island festivities

Along with everything else that Bermuda holidays have to offer, a visit to the Festival of Performing Arts is the perfect way to experience the rich culture of this beautiful island nation, as well as sampling acts and performers from many other places.

The festival was conceived by the world renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin, working with Edwin Leather, then Governor of Bermuda, and John Ellison, who was to become the first chairman. It was inaugurated in 1976. Yehudi Menuhin and his sister Hephzibah performed at the first festival, ensuring plenty of interest from the very beginning. At this time he also founded the Bermuda Menuhin Foundation, an organisation which led to string tuition being provided in the schools by a resident string quartet which was set up on the island.

The festival today

Anyone visiting on Bermuda holidays during the festival will be able to see the great work that continues to be done. While the focus of the festival was originally on music, it has come to embrace all performing arts. The festival has several outreach programmes that fulfil the dreams of its founders: that it would give youngsters and other residents of the island a chance to get involved in new arts through school visits and workshops.

The combination of high culture and beach retreat is a seductive attraction to visitors. The Festival of Performing Arts will provide visitors on Bermuda holidays with a completely different picture of the island and its culture. The temperatures in January and February are very pleasant, averaging 17° to 18°C, making this the perfect time to slip away for a holiday.

Brighten up January

There is always a wide variety of acts on show at the Bermuda Festival for the Performing Arts, from the cream of Bermudan home-grown talent to fantastic acts from across the world. If you are on the island during the early months of the year, make sure you check out what it has to offer.

John Dixon is Managing Director of Prestige Holidays and visits Bermuda at least twice a year. He has been providing luxury Bermuda holidays as well as luxury holidays to many other destinations worldwide for over 30 years.

Bermuda holidays are the perfect opportunity to find out more about this unique island paradise in the Atlantic Ocean. Here is a little taster of facts and trivia to get you started:

Bermuda shorts: Most people on Bermuda holidays will, at some point during their holiday on the island, take the plunge and slip on a pair of Bermuda shorts. They have become the national dress of the island, being sported by the country’s athletes at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. The shorts have become so popular that they are worn by people from all backgrounds on the island – men and women, white collar and blue collar. They can even be worn as formal wear, in darker colours rather than the more usual pastel. The shorts were developed from the hot-weather uniform of the British army.

Pirate haven: Visitors on Bermuda holidays today will have a much easier journey than many in the past did: during the age of colonialism, Bermuda played a central role in the empires of a number of pirates, who liberated gold and cargo from passing ships. An early pirate named Henry Jennings operated from the island. Jennings became a pirate after being hired by the then governor to help him deal with pirates. Jennings and his crew largely attacked French and Spanish vessels in the area, and he was one of few pirates who managed to outlive the pirate life and go into retirement.

Jamestown Exodus: Those on Bermuda holidays will arrive on the island in good health looking forward to a perfect holiday, but some of their predecessors weren’t so lucky. Bermuda was initially colonised by the occupants of a ship on their way to Jamestown. The Sea Venture, Admiral Sir George Somer’s ship, was wrecked during a storm, with survivors finding shelter on the island. It took them a year to build two more ships, which they christened the Deliverance and the Patience. They then made the journey to Jamestown. Once they arrived they were appalled by what they found. The population had dwindled to almost 10% of the original following a savage winter, and food had run out. It was decided to abandon the colony and head back to Bermuda, taking a detour to catch fish to sustain them for the journey.

A few others… A few last trivial facts to leave you with…

Bermuda is the oldest British colony;
Codfish and potatoes is the traditional Bermudan breakfast;
Kite flying is customary on Good Friday, where people gather together and fly homemade kites.

Bermuda holidays can take many different directions: they can involve beach activities, nature adventures, sight-seeing tours or a full-on shopping whirl. You can wear yourself out experiencing all the islands have to offer, or lie down in the sun all day on the gorgeous pink sands – the choice is yours! A different option, though, is to take some time to explore the very British roots of Bermuda.

On Guard for Bermuda

Bermuda holidays can be spent, in part, discovering the fascinating history of the island. In Bermuda, history finds its defensive representatives in the forts that abound on the island. Spend time to explore these remnants of a time when Bermuda was an outpost of the British Empire.

Fort Hamilton – This imposing fort sits high above the city of Hamilton. The Duke of Wellington ordered construction in 1868 when he felt the island was threatened and he wanted to protect Hamilton Harbour. The panoramic views of the harbour are amazing, and you should also check out the moat and the underground passageways. Of note are the 18-ton guns – never fired.

Fort St. Catherine – This fort is located in St. George Town and it dates back to 1614. The fort was upgraded in the 19th century for the last time between 1868 and 1878. Be sure to visit the keep, to admire the small arms display and an exhibit of the cooking area. You can watch a short audiovisual show on the history of St. George, and even see a replica of the English Crown Jewels.

Fort Scaur – Set amidst Fort Scaur Park, this fort dates from the 1870s. It sits atop the highest hill in Somerset. Its purpose was simple – to protect the Royal Navy Dockyard. Wander over the large, dry moat or along the ramparts. From here, you have a marvellous view of the Great Sound.

Sporting Events

Is anything more British than cricket? The locals in Bermuda are fans of the sport –very big fans! Check out the local cricket clubs to find a smaller, friendly game, but the biggest match occurs during late July or early August. This is the Cup Match Cricket Festival. The East End Team faces off against the West End Team in a show of island pride. Be there to cheer them on wearing blue-on-blue to support the East Enders or navy-on-purple to show your support for the West End Team. It’s all part of Bermuda holidays British fun!

Dining Experiences

Dining out can be a very British affair in Bermuda. There are numerous pubs providing the essential pub grub with, of course, some providing slightly Bermudian variations. Sample the fare at the Frog and Onion Pub in Sandys Parish, or, for a touch of the Irish, head to Flanagan’s in Hamilton. The Henry VIII is a popular English restaurant with a truly Old English charm.

But what is the British dining experience for those on Bermuda holidays without a high tea? Heritage Court is a classic, distinguished and very conservative dining establishment. Every afternoon, while subtle piano music plays, you can sit and have High Tea. It is calm, relaxing and the perfect way for those on Bermuda holidays to round out a very British day on the island.

John Dixon is Managing Director of Prestige Holidays and visits Bermuda at least twice a year. He has been providing luxury Bermuda holidays as well as luxury holidays to many other destinations worldwide for over 30 years.

Sometimes it is good to apply the brakes to a fast-paced vacation and slow down to a more relaxing tempo. Bermuda holidays can certainly give you the opportunity to do this. You can always just lie around and sunbathe on the fabulous pink beaches, but you can also spend a day watching one or the other, or both, of Bermuda’s world class sporting events – yachting and cricket.

Yachting Races

Bermuda is an island with a lofty reputation in the yachting world. Over the years, it has become a world-class centre for yacht racing, and the season is often a highlight of aficionado’s Bermuda holidays. The racing season starts in March and lasts until November and in this time period, you can see, or even take part in, at least one of these major racing events.

King Edward VII Cup – This takes place every year in October. The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club sponsors the race, which features some of the world’s finest sailors. The site of all the action is the Great Sound.

Bermuda Ocean Race – This takes place every other year in June. The race begins in Annapolis, Maryland and finishes in Bermuda.

Marion (MA)-to-Bermuda – This race occurs in June during odd-numbered years. As the name suggests, the race begins in Marion and ends in Bermuda.

Non-Mariners Race – This race always takes place in August. It occurs during the weekend of the Cup Match. Sandys Boat Club marks the start of the race and the day is full of various events including picnics, entertainment and a barbecue.

Newport-Bermuda Race – Like many of the other blue-water events, this one is not an annual event. It happens every even-numbered year. This yachting race ranks among the top and is for seasoned sailors and veterans only.

If you time your arrival correctly, your Bermuda holidays can coincide easily with the best of the yachting season.

Cricket Matches

Bermuda holidays can involve a variety of different sports and, if you are so inclined, you can also catch an exciting cricket match. Cricket is a favourite on the island and Bermuda even made the Cricket World Cup in 2007 – the smallest country ever to accomplish this. It is not surprising, therefore, that Bermuda celebrates a Cricket Festival. This occurs in late July or in early August. The Cup Match Cricket Festival is the most important summer sporting event on the island and lasts two 2 days.

Originally, the Cup celebrated the emancipation of the black slaves on the island. Today, two teams face off on the cricket field. The best players from the East End of the island meet the best of the West End of the island. Visitors on Bermuda holidays can show their support by wearing blue-on-blue for the East End and purple-on-purple for the West End.

For those who enjoy cricket no matter how important the match, come to the islands during the regular cricket season which lasts from April until September. You can visit cricket fields across the island including St. George’s Cricket Club and Somerset Cricket Club. Teams play regularly as they practice for the big matches.

Bermuda holidays can pass quickly when you are busy rushing around and having fun! Slow down the pace, relax, and become a spectator for a day instead. Enjoy the beauty of a yacht race or the intricacies of a cricket match and sit back and let someone else do all the running!

Here are a few FAQs and general assumptions relating to Bermuda holidays. The truth may surprise you in a very pleasant way!

Bermuda holidays are for the very wealthy!

This is a common myth. Bermuda offers a huge range of holiday opportunities to suit all budgets, tastes and interests. There are accommodation packages available that will appeal to people who wish to have a high degree of comfort on their holiday – but without needing to sell their house and home to pay for it. Do some research and have a look for yourself – you may be very pleasantly surprised by how many reasonably priced luxury packages are available.

Bermuda must be very hot, just like the other Caribbean islands?

A fairly widely held misconception is that Bermuda is in the Caribbean and has a tropical climate. In fact, it is not. It is off the eastern seaboard of the United States of America and has a sub-tropical climate. This isn’t just a geographical debating point – it means that even in summer, the average high temperature during the day is around 27-30 degrees and something that most people will find pleasant.

Bermuda holidays involve cruising

While it is true that Bermuda is an important destination for many cruises beginning in places such as Florida, this is not the only way of getting to the island. Holidays by air are perfectly possible and, in fact, very common.

Isn’t Bermuda famous for its beach holidays?

Yes it is, but also so much more. Just a short list includes things such as:

• World-famous fishing

• Spectacular reef and wreck diving in clear and generally shallow waters

• A huge variety of water sports

• Great dining out and entertainment facilities

• Superb historical sites arising from the four centuries of relationship with England and later Great Britain.

Can you hire cars on the island?

As a tourist, no you cannot. The reason for this is that the Bermuda islands (there are over 150 of them) are small and it is necessary to protect their environments and to avoid adding to traffic congestion. That should not affect your Bermuda holidays at all though. Public transport is readily available via bus, taxi and boat. If you do wish to make your own way around, you can hire a scooter – something that may prove to be far more suitable than a car for the narrow lanes of some parts of Bermuda and the speed limit is only 20mph.

What currency is used on the island?

The Bermudan dollar is the official currency and is linked to the US dollar. US dollars are widely accepted on Bermuda and currency changing facilities are numerous.

What is the local language?

English is both the official and most widely spoken language on the islands. A small minority of people speak Portuguese. The accent is often described as being something of a mixture of Caribbean English and southern US states English. On Bermuda holidays, language isn’t going to be a problem for you!

Even if you have never visited Bermuda, you may think that you have a pretty good idea of what Bermuda holidays are all about. Perhaps you envisage an idyllic sandy beach, palm trees and a thatched bar serving vibrantly coloured cocktails.

Well, it’s true, Bermuda holidays can, if you wish, have a large element of that sort of culture in them. Yet the key words in the above are “if you wish” because Bermuda holidays have so much more to offer than that sort of stereotypical island holiday.

Multiple surprises

The first thing that may surprise you, if you never been there, is that Bermuda is not in the Caribbean! It is a long way north of the Caribbean islands and, in fact, is around 600 miles east of North Carolina in the USA. The weather in Bermuda is subtropical rather than tropical, as is the case in the Caribbean, which can make temperatures a lot more pleasant.

Over the years, people from the true Caribbean islands have moved to Bermuda giving it a certain Caribbean flavour, but this has merged with a strong British tradition (the island has been associated with England/Britain for around 400 years). The culture is therefore unique and not simply a ‘carbon copy’ of a typical Caribbean island.

The second thing that may come as a bit of a surprise is that Bermuda has an extensive range of historical attractions, arising mainly from that long British association. There are many such ancient sites to visit if you are looking for something other than a beach-focused holiday. You might wish to try the world heritage site of St George’s, the Royal Naval Dockyard and the Maritime Museum. There is also a wide range of rather more modern attractions; including things such as maritime centres, a great aquarium and botanical gardens.

Bermuda on sea

Even if lazing on a beach is not particularly your style, there are certainly opportunities to enjoy yourself in the waters around the fabulous island.

Fishing is a major activity and tourist pastime, and a must for many during their Bermuda holidays. There is a vast range of fishing to choose from, including the huge game fishing that may end up with you battling a marlin or something similar.

If you are on the beach or out at sea in a boat, it won’t escape your attention that the waters are fabulously clear. This makes the waters ideal for scuba diving – something that is also extremely popular on Bermuda holidays. If you have never tried it before and old images of James Bond underwater epics come to mind, then don’t worry! There are diving opportunities to suit all skill levels and diving schools where you can learn the basics.

When talking to people about their Bermuda holidays, you may hear many stories of some great experiences. What you will never hear are people complaining that they were bored!

John Dixon is Managing Director of Prestige Holidays and visits Bermuda at least twice a year. He has been providing luxury Bermuda holidays as well as luxury holidays to many other destinations worldwide for over 30 years.

If you have never been to Bermuda and are a little hazy as to where it actually is, if you find North Carolina on the east coast of the USA and go about 1000 kilometres out into the Atlantic, you will find the group of islands that is collectively called Bermuda.

A British overseas dependency, Bermuda is a major centre of the tourist industry as well as being an important focus for offshore banking. Of course, not too many of us are interested in Bermuda holidays as an opportunity for finding out more about the global banking system!
The good news is that this island chain offers some of the best holiday making around.

Balmy an beautiful

For a start, this region benefits from some truly great holiday season weather. True, the winter season can be cloudy, windy and cooler (average 17 degrees) but for much of the rest of the year temperatures are very pleasant. In the peak summer months the average is in the high 20 degrees celsius range.

There are some truly spectacular beaches were you can while away the hours on clean, soft pink sand and if you decide that you need cooling down, the sea is crystal clear, warm and generally safe (though as always with the sea, you should follow local safety advice and guidance).

One of the things for which Bermuda holidays are justifiably famous, is the opportunity for some world-class diving. Not only are the waters clear but there are also some great opportunities to explore reefs and wrecks that are in moderately shallow water. There are numerous locations from which you can learn diving or improve your existing skills.

Finally, no discussion of Bermuda holidays and the sea could possibly conclude without mentioning fishing. The waters around Bermuda offer fantastic sport fishing and the chance to catch some truly huge specimens. Hiring a boat is easy and relatively modestly priced.

History and culture

It may be that you are the sort of holidaymaker that can only stand so much time on the beach, in the sea or around a swimming pool. If so, Bermuda will not disappoint you. Due to its long history (going back to the first English settlement in the early 17th century) the island has a number of historic and cultural centres that are well worth visiting. Just a sample of these includes, the Royal Naval Dockyard, St George’s and the maritime museum. There is also an excellent aquarium and botanical gardens where you can explore the local flora and fauna.

Accommodation and getting about

Luxury Bermuda holidays are readily available and at what you may find to be relatively modest prices. There are numerous hotels offering a range of accommodation to suit most tastes.

Holidays on Bermuda may be slightly different from some others you are familiar with, as tourists are not allowed to hire cars on the island. If you would like to get about yourself, you will need to hire a scooter or use the regular buses and ferries. The islanders drive on the left and, if you are on a scooter, paying careful attention to road safety is highly advisable as the roads may be narrow in some places, but the speed limit is only 20mph.

John Dixon is Managing Director of Prestige Holidays and visits Bermuda at least twice a year. He has been providing luxury Bermuda holidays as well as luxury holidays to many other destinations worldwide for over 30 years.

Bermuda is not a particularly big place – but you won’t have to worry that you will run out of things to do. Bermuda holidays will offer you a truly unique experience.

Bermuda holidays - familiarisation

Although commonly referred to as an island, Bermuda, in fact, consists of over 150 small grouped islands, which are occasionally referred to as ‘The Somers Isles’ – after an English Admiral. It is a British overseas territory located just over 1000 km off the east coast of the United States. Its capital city is Hamilton and its weather is predominantly subtropical in nature.

The island was actually discovered by the Spanish in the very early years of the 16th century. For a variety of reasons it remained largely free of permanent occupation until colonised by the English at the beginning of 17th-century, as part of English expansion into Virginia and North America. It is a little known fact that Bermuda is the oldest continually inhabited overseas English (British) possession. The first English coinage minted in North America was produced on Bermuda, and over the centuries, since its original colonisation, the island has absorbed a significant British influence. By the 20th century, it had become a major international tourist destination. The culture has evolved in recognition of this, taking on regional influences from the US and the Caribbean.

Bermuda holidays – things to do

As you may have guessed from its geographic location, Bermuda has some pretty good weather for much of the year! The average high temperatures between June and September are between 27 and 30 degrees celsius.

The island has some truly fantastic pink sand beaches and crystal clear blue-green waters. The combination of these great beaches, and the weather, means that many holidaymakers in Bermuda spend a lot of time on the beach engaged in water sports. In fact, Bermuda has some of the best fishing and diving conditions to be found anywhere in the world. In terms of diving, visibility is usually excellent and there are numerous coral reefs and shipwrecks that can be easily and safely explored (with appropriate experience or under suitable supervision) as they are in relatively shallow waters.

However, Bermuda holidays are not exclusively about sun, sea and sand. The island’s historical heritage has resulted in a number of major tourist attractions such as the Royal Naval Dockyard, the world heritage site of St George’s, and the Bermuda Maritime Museum.

So whatever other things you may decide to take with you on Bermuda holidays, you won’t have to worry too much about taking along things to keep you occupied!

John Dixon is Managing Director of Prestige Holidays and visits Bermuda at least twice a year. He has been providing luxury Bermuda holidays as well as luxury holidays to many other destinations worldwide for over 30 years.

If your idea of Bermuda holidays is of a peaceful, relaxing time sitting on the beach, enjoying the sunshine and sipping on a cool drink… then you’ll definitely find just what you’re looking for in Bermuda. However, for all those who are looking for a fascinating holiday full of mystery and adventure, Bermuda is home to a strange, mysterious phenomenon that has fascinated travellers for decades. Let the curious beware on their Bermuda holidays; for the island sits on the edge of the expanse of sea dubbed ‘The Bermuda Triangle’.

The actual limits of the Bermuda Triangle’s area have been debated, with some theorising its points are located in Miami, San Juan, and Bermuda. If the surf, sea and sand don’t quite satisfy your craving to venture into the unknown, then read on to look beneath the surface and try to pierce the depths of the Bermuda Triangle’s mystery.

December 5, 1945

Flight 19 was a training flight, composed of 5 TBM Avenger bomber aircraft, which went missing over the area of the Atlantic Ocean – later to be dubbed the Bermuda Triangle. The squadron, composed of experienced navigators, took place on a calm day and was led by veteran pilot Lt. Charles Taylor. Although scheduled to return to a naval base upon completion of their training exercise, the five aircraft never returned. All 14 airmen aboard were lost, and Navy investigators were subsequently unable to determine the cause. It’s unlikely they went AWOL (absent without leave) for some sneaky Bermuda holidays; it was claimed that the flight leader had been heard saying “We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don’t know where we are, the water is green, no white.”

The Triangle Takes Shape

Although the above incident has come to encapsulate the mysterious disappearances the Bermuda Triangle is known for, many different disappearances have marked the particular expanse as a place where vessels can go missing very quickly – and apparently without much warning. One incident resulted in the largest loss of life in the history of the US Navy that wasn’t related to combat; the USS Cyclops and the 309 crewmembers on board went missing without a trace in 1918.

If you’re a diving fan, you might see what you can find on your Bermuda holidays – the wreckage of boats and aircraft have been recovered on occasion by deep-sea divers. It was once thought that the planes of Flight 19 had been found, but serial numbers on the engines indicated they were different aircraft. The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle continues to this day.

While on your Bermuda holidays there are a lot of things that you may encounter that are unique to the beautiful island. Read this article to familiarise yourself with a few of the quirks and customs of the island, so you won’t find yourself feeling a little uncomfortable or confused!

Shorts!

Everyone throughout the western world knows the item of clothing referred to as ‘Bermuda shorts’. If you were thinking that this fashion style was not ‘vogue’ at the minute, you’re wrong! These shorts are always in style in Bermuda, and when you are on your Bermuda holidays,be prepared to see them everywhere. They are even considered ‘smart wear’ on the island, and you will frequently see businessmen wearing expensive tailored shorts on their way to business meetings or the office. If this is something you want to embrace while on your Bermuda holidays, then make sure that they reach just below the knee and wear tall socks and dress shoes to accompany them. It is also customary to wear a smart belt with the shorts.

Gombey dancing

Gombey dancing is a type of dancing that is unique to the island; it is definitely an event you should witness while on your Bermuda holidays. It is a mixture of West African, British and Native American dancing, and the music is colourful, rhythmic and very energetic. There are a lot of drums and beats within the music that make it very addictive and it’s almost impossible not to sway to the beat. The dance uses a mix of acrobatic leaps, turns, splits, high kicks and deep knee bends.

Both old and young join in the dancing and it is great fun for all generations.
